you dont lose overall volume with the low profile boxes, the 3 inches you lose on top, go towards the bottom of the box..giving you less clearance underneath the box (unless this was the room you were talking about)

That's really cool. What type of wood did you use and how will you weather proof it. You've got me thinking now because I have a domino joiner that's good for making boxes.

Curious if there are any tool boxes not made from diamond plate? It's not really a big deal, just burnt out on anything diamond plate.

Most diamond plate boxes are made from aluminum... although I think some steel diamond plate boxes may exist too. But anyway, durable plastic and steel are the other two popular alternatives. Plastic may warp and steel may rust.

I got my steel box for 30 bucks off craigslist minus the keys. Had some rust and paint problems though.

I removed as much paint and rust as I could and attempted to paint with Rustoleum Hammercoat.

Steel is also heavier. When I first got my toolbox, I was surprised at how light the aluminum was. I would assume steel would not feel the same...

Yeah, my steel box is pretty heavy. I don't know the exact mass of steel vs aluminum but I would guess 3x heavier.
the lightwieght aluminum lids are nice.

really??? no one has a pro-tec box? maybe they don't make a box to fit the Tacoma? anyone know?

I've had a couple pro-tec boxes, an in bed box in my old 77 chevy wheeler and one in a work truck, and i've also had a cheapo box too. honestly I'd never buy another tool box unless it was a pro-tec. best quality box built i think. very strong and very secure. I know a lot of the other brand boxes are extremely easy to get into and many fall apart with any good amount of weight in them. I'm sure some of the other brands are better than others, JMO.
