Horse power Hype

I am not a mechanical engineer nor do I claim to be one so maybe someone that is can clarify this for me. Ford and Jeep claim all this extra horse power with smaller engines at higher rpms. What about the torque needed to get some work done. I always thought torque counted also.

AFAIK this is why the Tacoma did not get the upgraded Dual-VVTi V6 that the 4 runner and FJ get, even though it has less horsepower, it is producing more torque at a lower RPM

For the physicist, horsepower = torque x rotational speed. Can't measure horsepower, you can only calculate it from torque measurements.

Horsepower does count in that it is directly related from one side of the transmission to the other. If you increase engine torque, obviously you increase wheel torque. If you give the engine a few more rpm that it can actually make usable torque with (which would calculate to more horsepower), you can also put shorter gearing in the transmission to match the change, and increase wheel torque.

It also depends on where you want your torque to peak. Do you drive at lower rpm pulling trailers all day, do you want the first punch off the line, or do you just hot rod onto the freeway and want all the upper rpm power you can get? Everyone's needs are different.

As for Ford's torque claims... I wouldn't consider jumping 400+ lb-ft by 2000 rpm on a 3.5L V6 a lack thereof.

As for the hype of horsepower, everyone is guilty. Even the 1GR - that 236 hp or whatever Toyota says only happens the millisecond before your rev limiter kicks in. No running over the power peak on this one.

Tacoma is rated at 236hp and 266lb-ft at 4,000 rpm.
4Runner is rated at 270hp and 278lb-ft at 4,400 rpm
FJ is rated at 260hp and 271lb-ft at 4,400rpm.

I just don't have the specific torque curves on the three engines. I'm curios why the FJ's engine is less than the 4Runner's when they are the same engine. Unless it's with the ECU.

Good low end torque is easy and nothing new. What is new and awesome is adding top end power to vehicles that never had them in the past. For example the average half ton truck needs the good torque of an average v8 to have the power to move large amounts of weight, but when you add lots of top end power to the equation, you then have the power to easily pass people and make it up the mountain pass when loaded down at speed.

There's also something to be said about overtuning engines and longevity. Specially with trucks. Keep it a little lower and it'll last longer. It's a truck not a race car. I know I'm not going to win any races against a BMW.

But I can park on top of him and prevent him from going anywhere...
