i've had 3 cherokee's with the 4.0/automatic. < Thats a very reliable drivetrain, i would go with what the factory put in it as its proven and so its not all hacked up.
I like the 2 door factor but nothing else. Thats a really old unit, you can come accross 87-96's for around 2g's in my area. Get a 4.0HO

yeah the 4.3 gm v6 is actually a really solid motor. but idk about it sitting in that jeep...i'd be a little sketched out. plus the original straight 6's are known for their durability.

4.3 are a direct replacement for the GM 2.8 that were used first on XJ's and are considered a worthy upgrade, so long as it was done properly.

4.0 didn't come about until late '88, and they had the Renix FI then, not the greatest system.

I say that this could be a good XJ for the money.

Thats true, i forgot about the gm 2.8-4.3 swaps and how cleanly it can be done.
I'm still an advocate of running what the factory put in it.
the renix computer's are bulletproof and i've never heard of a renix computer going out. It's all live data so you can't use a scanner to diagnose which sucks, but it really helps you to get to know your trucks efi system and get one with a multimeter.
It's the vacume diagram in the renix's that suck. I have an 87(first year) renix 4.0 cherokee now and that's my only quarrel. I put in a ho motor and got rid of most of it.
