the new rubicon unlimited is tough as nails, but has a really boring, underpowered engine.

also its a jeep (read my avi, i have more right than most here to mock the JEEP name!)

so that solid front axle means it still rides/steers like shit. both the soft and hard tops are not insulated and drafty. to close the doors you must slam them, and rubicons sacrifice even more on road manners by carrying heavier axles with SERIOUS lockers in them, rolling on mud tires.

if all your wife wants is the "coolness" of it, she will suffer on her daily commute. if she wants a serious 4x4 thats incredibly capable on the rocks. and can handle the rough ride, drafty cabin and constant maintenance go for it.

otherwise get her an H3... once you get past the fact its a hummer, you'll realize the H3 is a fantasic compromise of capability and comfort.

or you could be a REAL man, and talk her into a taco or 4runner!

The JK is a pretty nice ride. Far better on road and more comfortable than the TJ and YJ. The biggest issue I have with them (I looked at 'em before I got the taco) is that they are underpowered. Other than that they are awesome. Especially the four door.

Since I work for a Dodge/Jeep dealer I feel like I need to chime in on this, The new Jeep wrangler rubicon is an awesome jeep, The engine is underpowered slightly but is a reliable motor when maintenance is done, just like any other car. It uses the 3.8 liter motor thats been used in the Minivans since about 96. Yeah the ride isnt like a cadillac, but thats cuz its a Jeep. It does ride better than the older models, All in all I would take a new rubicon over an Fj anyday. And you cant beat a Lifetime powertrain warranty

you mean that warranty thats void if you go more than what 60, 90 miles past a reccomended service?

or the warranty thats void if you modify it?

i worked for a chrysler jeep dodge dealership to, i learned so many fun things!

You have to show up once every 5 years, for an inspection thats FREE, yeah if you go 60 days from the 5 year anniversary date its voided, but are you really not gonna go in for a FREE inspection? As long as you do oil changes and take care of the vehicle, your covered. Ofcourse your warranty is gonna be voided if you modify it, Theres nobody that doesnt void if modified, depends on the dealer if they'll be dicks or not, but you knew that since you worked for a dealer, yeah you do learn alot of fun things!

im okay with the modifying part.

it was the "if you do maintenance 60 days after recommended date/milage. waranty void"

    that pissed me off,

in utah or wyoming 60 miles can be half of the commute you do every day 6 days a week, with every other day off being sunday.

so if we/I dont schedule a vacation around every oil change (by a chrysler certified mechanic, all other non certified work renders warranty VOID)

we will blow our warranty by hundreds of miles?!!

no I believe you misunderstood, You have to have the vehicle inspected by a certified dealer ONCE every 5 years, if you fail to schedule an inspection 60 days after that 5 year date its voided. You dont have to get the regular services done at a dealer, as long as you show maintenance records from a state certified repair shop your covered. Its harder to prove something is out of warranty than to just warranty the failed part.

mines runnin strong at 163,000 abd counting. never had a rebuild. and most of what did break is my fault!

or caused by the previous owners wreck.

but the factory that made jeeps like mine has been gone for nearly 3 years now

and i gotta agree, the new stuff is nearly as unreliable as a chevy truck built between 1975 and 2001!

    really, that bad.

also, i loved when our dealership would get 6 wranglers delivered, 3 would have incomplete paint jobs, 2 crooked hoods, one missing an e brake cable. and another with mismatched door locks/ignition.

    arent unions awesome!

...but still, they(jeeps) are hella fun!

Same uh, individual at work relocated the mirrors and half of the paint under each bracket came off. It was like they put the brackets on before the paint had had a chance to dry.
