My dad is seriously considering buying my taco off of me and selling off a few of his vehicles. Now, normally I wouldn't want to part with my truck but, considering this keeps it in the family and dad wouldn't ever get rid of it, along with I could use it just about any time I wanted, this has me considering taking him up on the offer.

I was thinking about something like this VVVV to replace my taco. I've always really liked 12valve 2nd gen rams, and the idea of an 8 foot bed. Also MUST be 4x4 ext cab and long bed. I can get one with 150k-ish miles (NOTHING to a 12 valve cummins) for around $4k-$6k. (This would leave me with plenty of breathing room for repairs, mods, maybe even a good size trailer)

So what does TW think? Gay or Yay?!

(And no, it won't have stacks. And I'm not going to make it smoke on purpose)

What appeals to me is the power, interior room, and bed space. Not to mention a 12valve cummins is probably the most reliable motor out there. There are numerous trucks like this with over a million miles on one untouched engine and maybe 2-3 trannies?

It's not the motor that keeps me from buying any American-made trucks nowadays. In fact one of my favorite engines of all time is the 7.3L Power Stroke Turbo Diesel from Ford. The problem I have with them is that the rest of the truck falls apart. Since this is all opinion-based anyway, I've never been a fan of anything Dodge craps out--regardless of what's under the hood. No thanks, I'll stick to either Toyota or pre-80's Ford's or GMC/Chevy's.

I love that gen dodge, in fact my first truck was a dodgeram1500. That said I only owned it 2 years then went to toyotas, so I can't personally say how durable they are but I love the interior room and power.

sounds like you've made up your mind, and just want us to agree with you doing the swap. I'd just say give it a few weeks and make sure it's not just the fun idea of a different truck, if you still like the idea, do it!

^^ you're pretty much right. I just like to hear other people's experiences and opinions as much as possible with things like this. As far as dodge's falling apart, I'll admit they do. But I tend to take care of my shit, so I don't see it being a big issue.

Think this decision over well, You may be making a huge mistake and come to regret it later. Think about future fuel consumption + insurance + oil, upkeep, and repairs. Unless you have a buisness/personal need to upgrade, sounds like a bad idea financially. Just my .02

Personally, I wouldn't go with a dodge. Cummins' are great engines (because they came from ford :D) but I'd stick with GM of Ford if you are going to sell off you Taco.

Cummins is quite possibly the best available consumer-level Diesel engine.
Powerstroke is quite possibly the worst available consumer-level Diesel engine.

    Unfortunately....

The Cummins is wrapped in the worst available sheetmetal available in a consumer-level pickup.
The Powerstroke is wrapped in the best available sheetmetal available in a consumer-level pickup.

The Cummins will outlast 5 RAMs.
The F250 will outlast 5 Powerstrokes.

In my former life as a fleet manager, about half of my fleet were E-350's with the Powerstroke. My crew beat the living dogsnot out of those things and they never so much as sneezed. I have nothing against the Cummins at all, but I've also seen amazing results out of the Powerstrokes.

If you do buy a Dodge OP, make sure you keep a good monitor on the (undersized) front brakes. Those things were notorious for eating brake discs like they were Tic-Tacs.

I have a 98 12v and a 04 cr 24v. I absolutely love both of the trucks. Bought both of them new...... You will not regret getting the 12v. My 04.5 dodge 3500 4x4 has 504,000 km's and the motor has never given me any problems. Only 298,000 kms on my 98 12v. Also a flawless motor. And about 5x the hp and torque of my 4 cylinder tacoma with just about the same fuel economy. As for build quality, I really do not have any complaints about my dodges. They are not as bad as people think from a Toyota website! And the Toyota is not as perfect as it would appear to some on here.

    Yay!
