I wish I knew how to drive a standard right now! I've been looking for a Tacoma now that I could use a vehicle soon. I found this good deal, but it's a standard.... :(

Yup, graduated on the 7th. Starting next Monday I'm allowed off base, have a vehicle, and would really love to get back in a tacoma!

What AFSC did you get? I would wait a bit to get a vehicle... just my 2 cents, unless you are in tech school forever.

I got 1U031 (Unmanned aerospace system sensor operator) I play around with drones basically. My tech school is 3 weeks at Lackland and 5 weeks at Randolph as long as nothing gets delayed. Then I got to Creech AFB, Nevada for a year and a half OJT.

Yeah, I just don't want to buy something if i can't figure out how to drive it. My dad has a 2.7 manual 2nd gen but I only drove it once when I was 15. He's never had a problem out of it and pulls a dual-axle 28 foot camper at least once a month. So his is pretty good form what I've seen. I'd rather have a 1st gen. (01-04) But all those models in this area are junk.

I would say that you should wait until you go home on leave/RAP after you get done with school. No need to buy it now... wait until your parents/friends can go with you to look at a vehicle and you know some local mechanics to check it out for you.

watch youtube to get the theory down, then just drive drive drive drive drive until you get it. The only way you are going to learn is by driving one.

This is coming from someone who has been in long enough and seen some of the stupid decisions the new kids make fresh out of basic/tech school. I will tell you to wait a bit. If I could talk to every one of you before you made it to my base it would be so much easier. Just wait a few weeks... You can wait 8 weeks to look for a vehicle. Start looking around the area your parents are from. Get the RAP set up (recruiters assistance) and some extra leave, find the truck you want and buy at home.

Please don't buy a new vehicle. You won't have enough money for gas with payments. Don't buy a beater, you won't have the money to pay to fix it. I would love to give you all the lessons I have learned from the past, but it would take forever.

Find a parking lot and work your way through the gears without touching the gas pedal AT ALL...once you get this down, you can add feathering the accelerator.

    Easy as pie.

Tacoma is stock and staying that way, Pickup is TBA as of now.
Coming from people that don't know how to drive them right. OP if you were a little closer I'd gladly teach ya, always willing to teach manual driving to anyone that is willing, and serious to learn. It is a dying art and must be kept alive.

    Lots to come
You can teach yourself....just buy it and practice. I bought my first manual when I was 24 from a dealer......hopped it and stalled it all the way home!! Didn't take long at all to get it down......good luck!
