Double wide semi tires

So, recently I have been seeing a fair number of semi trucks with double wide single tires on the back of the rig and on the trailer, as opposed to dualies. What's up with these? Are they better? Cheaper?

We are changing our tri-axle tag tires to supers for just that reason;less weight to us means more sand/rock hauled....We do have 2 newer tri-axles with supers on the front to "increase" the front axle weights we can LEGALLY carry ......

We then cap those to "run" once or twice on tags ..twice the savings...

This is what is keeping us from a total switch...$$$$$$$$ up front cost and to convert is only cost effective if "ready built" part is available for the "app" you already own.....The boss/owner is seriously looking at 2 new trailers;dump trailer and flo-boy and both will be on Supers...HUGE gains when you start "Fresh" at the factory....

So does it seem like these will become the new standard then?

And semis now will no longer be 18 wheelers? 10 wheelers just doesn't have the same ring to it.

The super singles have been around for decades...more expensive on initial purchase, but less overall problems. They run cooler and give better durability for the same load capacity. Some of the drivers I know really like them with the most significant problem being damaged tires in remote areas and trouble getting replacements.
