Sold some very old tires, where do i stand?

i purchased a set of BFG all terrains from a tire shop, used tires. i went to have them mounted and have discovered all the information regarding tires over 10 years old.

the tires i have in particular were manufactured in 96! very old in comparison to what people are saying out there is "too old". i have contacted the shop i got them from, gone 2 days without a response. they were almost an hour away, where do i stand here?

being that they are likely unsafe and nobody will touch them, am i SOL or... ?

i can vaguely see it from both sides i guess. discount tire and such will not touch them because they claim "they" become responsible once they mount the tires for you. shop i bought them from was more then willing to mount the tires for me. seems like you would give someone back the cash and avoid potential liability?

my fault for not knowing this age thing was an issue, but as a business front selling only tires. you would think such rules wouldn't be an issue as a customer.

 

They shouldn't have sold you the tires just as much as you shouldn't have bought them. You can do your best to contact them and get them to set it straight but don't get your hopes up. I'd say chalk it up as a slightly spendy mistake and if they happen to set it right, then bonus, if not, you're hopes weren't up and you learned a lesson.

 

use them but constantly inspect them

and get rid of them asap

 

fair enough. i think if they won't answer i can be much more persuasive in person. the tires look ok, rubber seems to be in great shape. is it worth the risk though? not to me unless someone had a real world way to verify condition.

this is why someone would suggest not using them:

tires have a finite lifetime, and there is more risk of sudden
failure the older the carcass gets....
if you hit the road with outdated and/or suspect tires, you put
OTHER peoples life in danger. no one gives a shit what you do
but enter the road with old shitty tires, you are being irresponsible.
