how do i figure gas mileage out with this info?

I have been collecting receipts since i first got this Neon and this is where Im at. I tried to do x amount with 91/93 and x amount with 89 but sometimes i forgot and messed it up. somewhere in the middle i switched.

So now do i factor this once my tank is empty since I started out with a full tank and am not on empty to write down the mileage

I can wait for the 'ding' low fuel to come on to calculate it, but how much approx fuel is remainign when that happens?

As of righ tnow it looks like 1559 miles traveled so 1559/74.366=20.96 mpg

If i get this correct i can remove the last amoutn of gas (6.177) and that will bring me back to a full tank but i keep the mileage.
1559/68.189 =22.86 mpg
That assumes i was out of fuel when i filled up last.

I can make this easy. I will need fuel on the way home. I can either fill up at the ding, fill up when i think im about totally out or fill wup when ever.

How do i do it?

 

just subtract total mileage and divide by total gallons. what you did..take it from there. no foul in starting over

if the data is messed up...you cant just take out chunks of good info and do the same and average them.

 

I calculate your mileage as 24.2 mpg. The first fill up was not used during the 1559 miles.

 

So if i started with a full tank do i drive til i need another full tank or til an empty tank?

 

data isnt messed up. i just didnt write down the mileage on the one receipt (#3). it can be calculated into the grand total tho right?

As far as which octane, some gas station put what you bough ton the receipt and some dont. Since i buy some in NJ and some in NY i cant tell if $$3.99 was NJ cost for super or NY cost for regular. Id have to start over with that figure and write it on the back.

 

Use your tripometer, set to zero when you fill up. How many gallons your tank holds divided by how many miles you have went.

 

Doesn't matter what the tank holds... It is how many miles you drive from the last fill up to the next fill up... Don't add any gas between the two.

1) Top your tank (fill up)
2) Zero your trip odometer
3) Drive until you are ready to fill up again (for me it is close to 300 miles).
4) Record how many gallons went into your tank.
5) Look at your trip odometer and write down the miles you drove, then zero it again for the next tank.
6) Divide the miles driven by how many gallons you added.

Example: 313.6 miles divided by 17.5 gallons = 17.92 MPG (miles per gallon)

The 2005+ Tacomas all have 21 gallon tanks, and the low fuel light will come on after 17 gallons are used (4 gallons still remaining). The needle will point to E when you are down 18 gallons (3 gallons still in tank). You shouldn't wait until then to add gas, but you should know this in an emergency situation.

 

Its a long story but I dont want to reset the trip odometer. This Neon only has one and the standard odometer. I was also hoping to do this over the span of 10 tanks of gas or somethign like that so its more of an average. Sometimes I drive highway but most of its NYC traffic. 1/4 tank at highway will skew it up and read too high.

I had an iPhone and downloaded an app called "Road Trip". Now I got an Android and have an app called "FuelLog". Just plug in data from the gas receipt everytime you fill up and it continually tracks your running MPG and can make some neat graphs and estimated yearly values. It takes under a minute to enter and I just do it real quick before I pull away from the pump everytime.

Why do you care so much about your gas mileage on a Dodge neon? I think you should be happy the damn thing is still running, and WHY would you ever put anything in the gas tank, other than regular gas??

 

You don't have to empty the tank, but to calculate, you always need to completely fill the tank.

If you ever do a partial, then take the mileage from the last full tank to the next time you fill it, and add the total of both fuel-ups.

But you have to be consistent....




There's your overall on the right... 24.2... but look at the tank to tank. Because of what I assume are partial fills, you are showing everything from 6 to 100mpg.

Compare that to my attached spreadsheet that I used to track my '03 Tundra.

 

You don't need a trip odometer, just write down the odometer miles at each fill up, and subtract the smaller number from the larger...

Example: Odometer reads 47,516 miles when you fill the tank... and 47,815 miles when you fill it again... That is 299 miles between the two fill ups. The second fill up you added 12.7 gallons... 299 divided by 12.7 = 23.5 MPG (miles per gallon)

 

Miles driven divided by amount of fuel consumed. Very simple.
