Thinking about buying a Unimog

Seriously considering a Unimog for a purchase real soon. Looked at M35's and power wagons, but neither really fit my requirements. Not to drive in the summer so much (Taco and Jeep for that), but for the snow wading ability in the winter and drift busting early spring. Looking at possibly a plow for the mile of drive way as well that becomes impassible when the wind drifts it shut a few times every winter.

Anyone have any experience? Looking at 404, 406 and 416's with the latter two running the price up a fair bit. Its hard to justify 15-20K worth of winter wheeling snow toy, hence the plow idea.

I like the idea of the Doka for dogs and friends (in that order), but again the prices head north. Again primary importance factors are, reliability, go anywhere, utility around the farm (in that order). Comments are appreciated.

 

Unimogs are awesome! I've been around a few, never owned one, but I watched a unimog plow through 48"+ when we had a huge storm here. Four wheel chains and a wicked Vplow that could hydraulically go from a V to straight edge tilted left or right. Literally cleaned up the whole town of Madrid, NM, in 12 hours. The state had a state of emergency, and they were paying people with snow removal equipment to go and plow roads and driveways to get to people with medical conditions etc. This unimog was plowing 48"+ going uphill, on some roads that most of wouldn't drive our tacos down in good weather!
Buy one, you'll love it!

They are still being made. And only getting more badass!

 

I rode in one during a zip lining trip in NJ. It was impressive to say the least, 45 degree climb in the snowy/mud and it just kept going. The torquey diesel sounds almost as good as an MATV accelerating to provide gun support for a dismounted squad.
a fun and capable truck. Parts must be a bitch though...

Thanks for the comments, they dont come cheap and I am talking to two guys now about it. Going to email the bank today to get cleared up to $xxxxx so I can do some negotiating. I like the 4 door Dokas, but the price is steep for a real good one. Most of the 404's are gas , but all others since are diesel.

The build thread will have to wait even if I do get one, but woul be mostly cosmetic or comfort based. They are about as offroad capable as they are going to get straight from the factory. The older ones Like 60's and 70's are supposed to be the more capable off road models with new one being well into 6 figures.

I'll update when I pull the trigger.
