We looked at one when we bought our Tacoma last year. The GM was waaaay less truck for the same money, 5 cylinders is never as good as 6, GMCs have next to no resale value and the Tacoma looks much better too IMO. I see that the engine options are changed now, who in the world wants a diesel in a small truck? Personally I feel that if you buy the GM/Chev over a Tacoma then you should have bought a car or crossover SUV. They are in completely different leagues. A Canyon is a car trying to dress like a Tacoma

I like it kinda, actually, but I would need to immediately put a bumper on it. I love the factory approach angles on my truck. They make farm fields & ruts no big deal. That thing has the same low bumper as every other GM SUV and truck.

Really? Ever thought a truck is for, or I don't know towing and hauling and off road second? With that the new GM twins will out tow, out haul, get better MPG's and have more features than the Taco. That is a pretty ignorant statement.

There are tons of people who voice wanting a small diesel. More efficient, stronger, better mpg's with improved towing and hauling.

I think you had better look into something more than a Canyon if your into towing/hauling my friend. If you are in the market for a small truck you are in the market for a small truck. If you are towing something big enough for a diesel to be beneficial then you had probably start looking 3/4 ton or bigger. Not trying to tell you what you should buy but it's gonna save you money on brakes, rear ends, transmissions and possible tow bills if you buy a truck sized for the application that you will be using it for. A V-6 GAS is more than enough for what a Tacoma, Canyon or Ranger can comfortably tow/haul. Remember that towing isn't all about going forward, you need to be able to stop too, trailer brakes or not a Canyon ain't ever gonna woah up a 30ft RV. The comment was made to someone in the market for a small truck and it is valid. Tow with the appropriate vehicle, for your safety and that of everyone else on the road.

    It's a GM. Not good.

I was a GM diehard for 20 yrs plus, till my 06 Colorado puked the head at 76k. A Google search pulls up the warranty they wrote for it and all the horror stories. Somehow 2 GM dealers "didn't know" about the warranty and one then refused to fix it stating he didn't believe it was the head even though that same dealer diagnosed it, confirmed it, and entered it with GM and was approved by GM to do the job. GM is still trying to get out of reimbursing me $2000 for a "free" fix.

You are under the assumption I meant big and at the limit. I am the first one to state if you are towing near the limit regularly you should always step up (like the half ton guys who tow 10k plus regularly, get a 3/4 ton), it doesn't need to be big to be beneficial. There are tons of small landscape companies that tow a single axle trailer around town, they can save a ton of gas with a mid size truck and a diesel than a half town V8 (or even V6). There are tons of people who ride dirt bikes, snow mobiles and atv's, throw that in the bed or tow that trailer regularly to the lease or around the state going to different parks or tracks. There are tons of people with boats in the 18-23 ft range (usually 4k or less in weight) who tow to area lakes a couple weekends a month. You are looking at it all wrong. You can just put a blunt statement and say "if you are going to tow you need a full size" cause again that is an ignorant statement. You always want to leave a safety margin, if you are towing a 4k trailer, 7k is a good safety margin, you don't need a 10k half ton tow rating for that. My bike and trailer are maybe 2k, my two jetski's are maybe 3k and i can fit a dirt bike in the back, I certainly don't need a half ton but a CUV won't suffice.

I agree, the V6 is more than enough, but it also isn't nearly as efficient. You could dang near get double the mpg's while towing (that is where a diesel is most efficient compared to a gasser) to the V6. For someone who tows a smaller boat that is overkill for a full size, there are tons of savings in money over the course of the life of that truck to be had with a diesel. I myself won't be getting a diesel, for as little as I would tow (local lakes in flat Texas a few weekends a month), the upfront costs, higher maintenance and more expensive gas (not to mention a timing belt change at 100k) it wouldn't be beneficial to me. Not to mention how large a full size is and the added 10k costs comparably equipped, it just doesn't make financial sense. There are plenty of people who it would benefit or just flat out want a diesel. Many people are diesel advocates and would do anything to have one in a small truck package. I don't recommend towing up the eisenhower pass with a 6.5k boat regularly, but 4k in Kansas heck ya.

I certainly agree with you on the safe towing and with in limits, there just are smaller trailers that benefit a mid size.

I will be picking up the Chevy version when it hits lots at the end of Summer. Extended cab 6 ft bed 4x4 V6 LT trim I think. I'm not going to wait for the diesel which arrives in 2015.

I'll be sure to share a review here when I get it.

I moded 1999 Taco so much it had turned to Land Cruiser
That remains to be seen. I doubt they will have higher towing capacity, more likely in the 5500 LB range. On the other side Tacoma is capped at 6500 Not because can not not do it but because registration.
MPG, maybe little better. But not enough to me to offset Tacoma dependability or capability offroad.

I think its fugly both inside and out, and I bet they won't offer the 4x4's in a manual transmission which really makes me not like it. The only good side to it, maybe it'll cause Toyota to wake up and bring that D4-D over here to the states.

Per GM specs, the Canyon/Colorado US version with the gas V6 will max out at 6,700 lbs tow capacity.

I would normally be worried if this was a new truck, but as its been on sale globally for several years now with no major black marks, I'm sure it will be just fine.

Well add the emissions crap for the diesel and it will cause some issues. But its a GM still. Also overseas they have diesels only so of course the issues aren't major.
