Not the big overpriced gas guzzler they have now, but reminiscent of the 60's cruiser. Yea you could always buy a wrangler, but personally I would never buy another jeep in my life after owning one. I bet I'm not the only one who feels the same way. Why leave the market to jeep?

Cool idea, they wouldn't do it.

They make a hard top, it's named the fj cruiser. Why would they make two? Their is also a reason why every extreme off-road exploration uses the latest landcruiser, and no it's not because it's overpriced or a gas guzzler.

    I had a 2000 Cherokee sport

Toyota made the FJ to compete with the Wrangler and while it did much better than they initially projected, it didn't ever touch the Wrangler's sales numbers. Jeep has got a stronghold on the recreational 4x4 market.

I feel like that's because back then a lot of Americans would only buy domestic, but today I would say a lot more people buy foreign than domestic. Make it with the 2.7 and a 5 speed manual and I would be all over that!

I'm talking about a small, versatile cruiser that you can take the top off for nice weather driving with a starting price in the low 20's. Fitting into parking spaces and filling up for gas less would also be a nice plus.

Landcruiser has gone the way of luxury vehicles never to return to the roots it once was. Everyone now days wants a loaded up vehicle not a utility type vehicle that the old land cruiser was. I would like one like the old cruiser but it just wouldn't get the numbers Toyota would want to offer it. Sad.

Toyota will not make a top off true SUV because of safety reasons and cost of design/build vs sales.

I disagree, the landcruiser has always been the top of the line, most capable toyota SUV. It is engineered to a completely different level. It hasn't turned into a CUV.

As far as Jeep sales if you consider all the fjs, tacos and 4runners sold because of their off-road capabilities I would say it's pretty close. Why do you think Jeep doesn't make a mid size truck?

The FJ was relatively cheap to design because its frame and powertrain are based off the 4Runner. A true Wrangler clone with 4-link, coil-sprung front axle would be unique in the Toyota lineup. Development cost was probably the biggest barrier.

Toyota still makes true workhorse Landcruiser trucks. They are just not available in the US.

I think if the Fj had been a little more practical it would have sold a lot better. Literally every Fj owner I've talked to complains about the lack of view especially towards the rear. I know of two people who didn't buy one simply because of that. I know its not supposed to be 'practical' but... Just buy an fj40 and you'll have the best of both worlds. ;)

When I'm done with college, an fj40 will be at the top of my toys list. :D

Don't the new FJs get better MPG's over any of the previous models?
