I own a 97 rav4 and for me at least it has been a model of dependability. It was my first car and I still own it and beat on it. Currently has 160,xxx miles and counting. I'm now in the process of turning it into a badass zutocrosser. The current rav4 is nothing like the original but outta those two the op listed I'd lean for the rav.

The current Forester 2.5i is 200 lb lighter than the current Rav4 AWD, while putting out similar hp. Gives you an idea of which one is the better engineered vehicle.

Congratulations on your purchase of new Rav4! I decided to trade my 2010 Camry for a new 2013 Rav4 for the wife back on February 2013. Just got the base LE in all black and we love it. Very good value on a near flawless vehicle which averages 30mpg and has above average performance. Only been to the dealer for oil changes. It's a keeper!:)

Forester - more passenger room by 8 cubic feet, more cargo room with seats down, better gas mileage with AWD than the Rav4 with FWD.

Im using a rav4 now as rental. Gas is ok. Comfort is average. And well im not to stoked on Toyota right now for all my parts where back orders while it sits in the air on a lift a toyota.
But the a\c kicks ass! Rav4 has a lot of options too, like 4wd a sport mode. Eco mode. Wounder if there is an atrac option?
