When batteries charge they produce Hydrogen gas and it is explosive, remember the Hindenburg blimp, it contained the same gas.

Also bad voltage regulators can overcharge batteries which increase the hydrogen amount normally produced and anything such as a loose connection can cause a spark setting it off.

That is why you are warned never to smoke next to a battery and when jumping you are supposed to hook the ground clamp to another ground other then directly to the battery to avoid causing sparks during connecting and disconnecting.

Batteries are one of the dangerous things that people just take for granted and fail to use a little caution around

My dad's truck had a battery explode in it once too. He went to crank it while out running errand, and it just popped. It was enough to slightly dimple the hood in one place. It was an Interstate battery, which I'll never own because of this...
