Wideband with my A/F

My friend just brought over three gauges for my Subaru WRX from the states: Boost, EGT, and A/F.

For the A/F, I only bought the gauge because I only want to do some monitoring. I took them to my friend's shop cuz he is installing them all for free and he says he cant install the A/F gauge without a wideband. I could be stupid cuz I thought you only needed a wideband to tune the A/F.

He pulled out a wideband at his shop and it was a long black rectangular box and said without this box the gauge wouldnt read.

I always thought all you needed to read A/F was the gauge and welding a bung in your exhaust before the cats to feed the A/F sensor. Am I wrong? Do I also need to drop for a wideband to even read my A/F?

Plz hurry with your inputs because, if I do indeed need to drop on a wideband, I need to do it SOON because my other friend is coming from the states to China and he needs to bring it over for me.

Thanks!

thx! I guess another question is for those of you who are running A/F gauges in your trucks, is it merely a connected to an A/F sensor plugged into your exhaust or are you also running a wideband? I just want to be able to monitor my A/F ratio.

Well, I have the Innovate LC-1 setup for my car. It is the sensor that goes in the exh just like narrow band o2 sensors & connects to the gauge or to a piggyback ecu & gauge to control & monitor the fuel mapping which will be what's going to happen on the car. I'm pretty sure all you need is the sensor to run the gauge as far as just monitoring. Again, I haven't hooked this up yet but have been researching & collecting parts to control the fuel/timing on my car. I did score an extra header that already had the extra bung on it for the wb o2 sensor. You will need an extra bung welded on for it.

^ so yours is like the hand held device that plugs into an o2 bung in the exhaust? Im guessing that is like having a gauge and a wideband in one thing. I was googling around and found that there are wideband and narrowband readers. narrowband aparrently only show lean, rich and normal while wideband shows you the exact ratio. My gauge is the one that shows the exact ratio, but it is only the gauge and the O2 sensor. There is also a wire that leads out of the a/f sensor that, my friend showed me with an extra black wideband box he had lying around, went into a wideband box. So does that mean I need that box thingy to be able to even use my gauge? or do I only need it to actually tune the mixture?

Mine is seperate item. You have the wb o2 sensor that will run the gauge for monitoring & it will also feed a piggyback device that will tune the fuel/timing via maps that you load from software on a laptop.

is this piggy back device you talk about pretty much like the URD MAF Calibrator?

Not sure. What I have is an MPI tuner with NA module which wires into ecu & takes over control of the fuel mapping/ignition timing. The wbo2 wires into it for afr readings. It does nothing with the maf.
