I'm selling my 350Z on Craigslist. I've gotten a few nibbles and people are asking for the VIN. Is this something I can safely give out so they can run a Carfax report? I don't know if handing out the VIN can lead to problems. Can people submit an accident report with a VIN and trash the Carfax report with accidents and repairs that didn't happen?

I think you will be safe, besides anyone can look at your VIN number on your car, it is not exactly hidden. You can always purchase a carfax yourself and hand / email it out with VIN blacked out as well.

You should be fine. If someone wanted your vin for malicious purposes, not that there is much that can be done with it, they would simply walk up to your truck/car and read it off the dash.

Asking for the VIN is kinda odd , I guess maybe they want to do their own CARFAX check I don't know what the ramifications are by giving this out but I don't think I'd do it unless they showed up , were serious about buying your vehicle especially if your selling on Craig's, I've sold a couple of trucks on there but never have been asked for this. Hhmmmm, you pose a good question......:confused::cool:

    In my sig
My bank always checks the VIN prior to approving a loan.

I wouldn't have an issue w/ giving a VIN to someone interested in buying a vehicle from me.
