I have been looking at some Subarus lately and was wondering why they went to a hatchback style with the WRX, or has it always been like that? anyone know?

From what I've heard the new hatchback is the best performing line yet, something about a better weight distribution.

I sold my 02 WRX 3 weeks ago, and bought 02 Tacoma. its rock solid car totally reliable, and fast. the combination of awd and turbo cant be beat. great boxer engine, but crappy tranny. stick shift is very cumbersome when i tried shift quickly. the only flaw is tranny and turbo lag...unlike my tacoma, WRX has to be revd up all the time. high mileage WRX will use some oil..nature of turbo engines. i had 76k miles on my WRX and uses 1.5 quart every oil change or 3k miles.

Check out i-club.com also for some info on the subies. I have an 04 wrx wagon with 80,000 miles on it and its still running great. No mods except suspension and sway bars. Great car, fun, reliable, gas mileage sucks thought for how small it is. It gets about the same as the truck.

yea, also I heard they designed the WRC variant of the sti as a hatchback because a hatchback design has a higher probability of landing on the wheels in a roll over versus a regular four door, and since they have to produce at least 200 variants of their WRC car for the public, they stuck to the design for all STis and WRX except for the four door versions

We used to own a Legacy Sedan for about 5 years. Awesome vehicle....never had any problems with it. My father-in-law bought it from us, then it was sold to a co-worker. That thing is still on the road.

They're frigin unbelievable in the snow!!

I traded-in my '02 WRB WRX. It was one of the first WRX's here in MI. I had it for 4 years. Its the only new car I have ever bought (probably be the only one). I did several mods over the years to it; EBC, uppipe, downpipe, muffler, BOV, etc. It was an absolute blast to drive. And, if you could actually keep out of the throttle, it would get excellent mileage. It only happened a couple times for me though. No problems other than one with my local dealer's service dept. I think my favorite mod was the Prodrive muffler. It sounded awesome. I had a Borlad exhaust on it but that was way too loud driving down the highway. Drond like crazy and drove me nuts.

Insurance was cheap when I first got it. Then I saw the effects of too many kids getting them and wrecking them. The insurance doubled in the time I had it. I am old and it was cheap to insure for me but I got tired of the increases. It cost the same as a Corvette 2 years older!! I could insure an '83 Porsche 911SC for the same price! (a dream car, almost traded the WRX for one).

STIs are nice but your maintenance costs are higher on them; bigger tires, Brembos, etc. Not to mention insurance.

I had mine looking like an STI a year before they came out.

LIke someone said, they are great cars and will last an awful long time if you treat them right.

Plus a Subie is the funnest thing you can drive when there is "2-"3 inches of frsh snow on the roads!

I had three Subarus (bought new in 1977, 1980, 1987)... all three were 4WD wagons. Great little vehicle and very trouble free... I took it to the most amazing places even with the little 13" tires at the time... When Subaru went to All Wheel Drive... and no Low Range, they lost me!
