Why do you assume that the government is telling the truth? Hell, this administration lies about the lies that it lies about! Also with Obama now owning GM (read government motors) what a great thing to bash and trash the competition. Also this would not be the first time that the government has mandated recalls that were not entirely true. ie GM truck gas tanks, firestone tires on explorers, suzuki samy rollovers.

Most administrations lie. But yeah, Lets bash the foreign car company, so people might buy foreign share holder owned so called American cars.

IMO I think Toyota didn't have plans on doing the recall, I think they did it as a preemptive move, since NHTSA was about to do it for them, and it looks much better for them to say we chose to make the recall rather than say we were forced.

    Shit it is getting worse

Was watching CNBC and they reported this.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood has advised Toyota drivers to stop using their recalled cars. "We need to fix the problem and not have people have to put it in neutral. If you own one, I say stop driving. Return it now,"

In the end I think Toyota will be fine. I remember hearing they had a ridiculous amount of money saved up for recalls. I think Toyota will handle the situation quickly and flawlessly and then things will be back to normal in the near future. It will be exciting to see some of their future commercials.

IMO the Prius issue is being blown out of proportion, only 14 complaints in Japan and about 150 in the US, there are over 1 million Prius on the road, so the complains are what?.. Not even 0.05% of Prius owners have complained?

This is one of the reasons I hate news, they tend to sell as much as possible a topic when the topic is hot. In the next few weeks any small thing that comes up with Toyota you will be sure that its going to be in the headlines.

I do as other have said somewhat glad that this has happened to Toyota not because I want to see them like this, but because this might just get them to get their head straight again, they ignored the pedal issue to a point the got themselves cornered and they could have avoided all this if they had taken some action before.

    Conspiracy theorists..

If that was a lie, then it's a blatant lie.. with no grey area. I don't think Toyota would have let it slide.

I don't get your logic. How many percentage does it have to represent before you think it's NOT overblown? Take air safety for instance. How many percentage of air passengers get killed each year? does it still make each air incident less news worthy?

A lot more than that. If with less that 200 complaints you would make a recall of a certain vehicle, then every car on the planet would be on recall. EVERY model receives complaints. The complaints on the Prius are just that complaints, there has not been any evidence of a problem.

Okay so you're basically saying it's some arbitrary value that suites you..

Complaints of seat covers ripping is totally different than complaints of performance issues directly related to safety.

Ok then think of this, every company has received complaints on sudden acceleration. How many of them have been recalled?

:facepalm:Yes I know, so we have 200 complaints of 1,000,000 vehicles thats .0002% are you telling me that .0002% is enough to say that there is a problem with ALL of them? That's like me going to New York, get robbed, come back home and say I will never go to New York again because they are ALL thiefs. .0002% its not enough because the MOST probable cause is an isolated problem. And when I say every car company received complaints I'm not just saying complaints about dumb stuff for example as I mentioned in the above post, every car company receives complaints on sudden acceleration and you don't see every company making a recall about it.

and what I meant about it being in the news is exactly that, the fact that other vehicles on the market have received more safety complaints than that, and you don't see CNN going all over them. They did it with the Prius since Toyota is the hot topic of the moment.
