Nice to see this taking hold.
As for steel vs aluminum, I actually prefer the aluminum. The strength it adds will hold anything that 'should' be loaded over the tailgate of the Tacoma. I had the aluminum on my 07 and punished it quite well over 4 yrs with no more than some scratches (aluminum is more prone since it's softer). I resold it to a local guy and it's still being used today, 7 yrs later after it was installed originally.
The weight of the steel makes the tailgate pretty heavy, so the lower weight and still adding a bunch of strength is why aluminum would be my choice.

I went with your steel one because I could afford it! You get used to the weight pretty easily. If you take the time to paint the steel one correct it holds up pretty good. But I only have 9 months or so on mine.
Not having to paint the aluminum stiffener is its biggest advantage IMHO.

I'm pretty sure that RT will send us a special checkout code for the discount (hoping we still get another couple of people in on the thing!) no matter which type we pick, when we go to checkout on his site. At least that's what I gathered from the original GP when I read through the entirety of this thread.

I think that's about right; either the steel or the aluminum because the aluminum material is a bit more expensive, but the steel will about even out in shipping weight/costs.

    Here's the current GP list:
    1. mizhop
    2. Sugar Silva
    3. Kramer. As long as he can ship to Alberta , Canada
    4. Ginga
    5. Thegenerik1
    6.Machineman89
    7. Kolunatic
    8. nd4spdbh
    9. Lord Helmet.

I hope you're in on this too PeeRunner! Please don't forget to copy/paste the list and add yourself to it if interested.

    Eric,

Any chance of getting diamond plate aluminum in the GB? If not, do you have any plans for another diamond plate run anytime soon?

    Thanks, Rob

Possibly.... as with the previous runs of diamond plate I need a minimum of 4. I get 4 pcs per sheet so that way I wouldn't have left overs.

I would definitely go for diamond plate aluminum. I was under the impression that the steel was the diamond plate, and the aluminum was smooth, and those were the only options. It's good to know otherwise!

I wonder, would it be a good idea (or possible) to get the aluminum powdercoated? Or maybe it has some other kind of coating? I know that the steel finish deteriorates faster without some kind of protection, but would it help the aluminum too? I skimmed back through, and can't pick up any mention of something like this earlier in the thread...

I don't have one on my truck, but I do HAVE one (though it's a cheapie and it's been years since I've used it), and I think it depends on the shell. Check back earlier in the thread, there are some good pictures of the plate on the back of someone's truck, and the one from the side of the tailgate shows it best; there is a VERY small gap between the tailgate itself and the plate. I recall the poster said that he could barely get a fingertip/nail in the gap.

The shell I have just has a cheap tongue on the latch/handle that swings down, and I really have no idea if it would still work with the plate on the tailgate or not. Anyway though it's not really a security thing, as my tailgate has no lock.
