05+ Tacoma Tail gate reinforcement group buy

Ok so follow up. I went and checked and sure enough its sitting on those bolts. I do have them and they are painted with the tailgate. So the holes would have lined up fine I'm guessing if I would have removed those bolts.

Is it safe to remove them? What are they for?

It takes all of 10 minutes to do. Just wondering if removing them does anything bad to the tailgate

 

You could replace the 2 top bolts if u feel the need to get a flush top edge with some countersunk screws, a lot more flush and water ever they hold is still held in

 

And what do they hold?

 

I don't even see those in the parts detail.

I honestly do not know what they even do. Just that they were added at some point and removing them from the edge makes the reinforcement slip right on vs causing alignment issues with them in place. I always just tell everyone (and do it myself too) to remove them and I've never seen any issues with them gone.

 

There's another diagram floating around that shows them. I double checked last night and that was the problem. The tailgate protector was resting on them.

I bought more of the screws so they sit flush and when I put them in I'll remove everything and take those bolts off the tailgate. It's on there fine now but it only takes 10 minutes to fix.

So far no scratches. We will see after I go and remove those other boots that are stopping it from sitting flat.

It's going to be a tight fit in the middle no matter what. I won't be surprised if it's a little scratched at some point. I do have some clear 3m tape I could use as a protector but we will see.

picked up the pallet of them from forming today. As many bare ones as possible will be shipping tomorrow and the PC orders will be sent there for coating and then shipped as soon as they get them done. I'll have to double check, but the 1st couple of smooth aluminum PC'ed ones may be real lucky and shipping tomorrow as well as I think there's 1 or 2 leftovers from the previous batch that I just got back from the coater yesterday too.
