well this might help a few of us:

After having firing issues with the SS ballast..i received a new pair of DSP and i am still having trouble with them…I first thought it was from the cold temps but i installed everything in a nice heated garage…So i was like, what are the odd's of having the same firing issue on the same headlight with both the SS and DSP's?

One thing was very strange on both ballast, every time it was lit up and i hade my hand right behind the bulb (D2S connector)…at the slightest touch, it would turn off the light…So maybe the trouble is from the connector, so i barely pulled inward the 2 metal flanges inside the orange socket and i would still have the problem…then i decided to remove the orange rubber seal at the bottom of the socket and BAM…now it lights up every time and does not turn off anymore even if i wiggle the connector….

So in my case…was it really a cold temperature problem??? i dunno but i can tell you that the cheap little rubber piece was stopping the socket from making a good connection…i'll do some more test's and comment further….

But i thought you guys should try this too in case it works!!!

Just read the guide in my signature and you will understand lol

I might jump in on this again to start retrofitting for other tacoma guys.

I can get the kit for $247 with 55w ballasts and bulbs, get two lights off ebay for $200, make the lights to somebody's liking and do a swap for the core lights. I am getting really bored with all this cold weather and need a project!

    Retrofits are so worth it...

Is the difference in light output worth going up to the FX-Rs?

Trust me...it's WAY easier than you're making it out to be. Just take your time, stay PATIENT, and pay attention to the details. Something is bound to go wrong, so why stress. You can take a gander at my retrofit if you'd like. I'm a 1st gen owner, but a retrofit is a retrofit. Cheers!

I emailed today about an order is placed today as well, not expecting anything until next week sometime. But anyone know if I should've contacted Andrew before completing my purchase to get my $50 for a how-to kicked in to get that taken off the total amount? Kind of frustrated with myself, I paid full amount. I should've come here first.

    :pout:

Just got back from working up north for a month. Swapped in my replacement ballasts about 15 minutes ago. So far so good! I'll wait until we get down into the -15°C range this week and see how they hold up:D

For anyone that has questions on the D2S versus the mini H1. This is what I got in an email from TRS, direct copy and paste.
For the most part, the performance of the Mini D2S and Mini H1 projectors is even, but I will highlight some of the small differences below:

    1) Beam uniformity: The Mini D2S is a bit better in this category, with slightly more even-ness in its output.
    2) Beam Width: The Mini H1 is slightly wider here (just barely)
    3) High beam performance: The Mini D2S has a brighter, more defined high beam (bi-xenon) output
    4) Cutoff color/sharpness: Both projectors have clear lenses, which gives them a sharp and colorful cutoff line. The curved cutoff shield inside the Mini H1 projector results in slightly more color, however.
    5) Bulb type used: Obviously the H1 takes H1 and D2S takes D2S, and we feel that D2S bulbs offer a bit more precision, though no more light since they use the same light producing capsule.
    6) Size: The D2S version is about 1/2" shorter in overall depth, but is also slightly wider and a little bit taller than the H1 version.
    7) Modification to your OEM housing: the diameter of the mounting shaft on the H1 is 22mm, whereas it's 32mm on the D2S model, so unless you have an H4 headlight, you will likely have to widen up the bulb hole by a bit to use the Mini D2S projector. (The Mini D2S was designed for reflectors using H4/9003 bulbs but is still definitely usable in other applications).

Therefore, if you value the categories more than the H1 wins, you should probably go that route - and vice-versa for the D2S model.

Personally I just "like" the D2S model more since I favor the categories that it outshines the H1 model more in, but ultimately its up to you - since both should fit your vehicle with little to no modifications at all.

You can check out some customer sent-in pictures of the outputs from both here:

Please let us know in regards to your wife's Rogue and we'll be glad to make a recommendation there as well.

    Thanks again Tyler!
