What's the difference between oem vs aftermarket hseing?

 

Wondering the same thing? How is the difference in quality?

Hi guys. I'm pretty sure I'm in. I'm just rushing to get up to speed on all the options. I'll look at this again tonite.

 

1. I don't see a Morimoto 35W ballast on TRS. Is it called the Morimoto XB35 now?

2. I don't see a Morimoto H4 wiring harness on TRS. Is it the Motocontrol Bixenon H4?

3. I'm pretty sure I'm going with the aftermarket housing but I might take an upgrade option on the projector/ballast/bulb if there is one. On this point it looks like there is a better warranty on the 5Five ballast. Does this ballast go with a higher stage/wattage bulb family? I don't see a 5Five bulb on the TRS page but I do see OEM bulbs which I'm not necessarily interested in unless there is some jump in performance.

Overall though this looks like a really nice kit as is.

Being that the 1st gen headlights are always on, does that mean retros always stay on too?

 

I think most people can turn them off. Maybe Always On is a California/Canada thing.

My understanding is that the retros plug into the stock controls so yes I think in your case they would always be on.

 

Thank you for my response, yea I never knew why that was the case. The only time my headlights aren't on is when I have the e-brake engaged and car in in Park.

 

My headlights only come on when I turn the stalk that controls the lights/blinkers.

Yours must have daytime running lights which have been known to cause issues with using HID's for some people.

To disable them you cut a white/green wire on one of the harnesses explained in this thread:

 

I purchased after-market headlights/signals/corners from Amazon last year. They were Matrix brand whatever that means and a pair of headlights cost about $50. I personally could not see the difference from OEM in terms of appearance or build quality for the headlights.

OEM housings sure wouldn't be worth the $240 difference for me. They all have clear polycarb windows that eventually cloud up if you don't protect them with something. I'd rather spend that money on an upgraded projector/bulb/ballast if it made sense.

Aftermarket headlights tend to fog up slightly sooner than OEM. But they both do that eventually either way. That's the only difference I've seen/heard of.

Easy way to combat this is to throw a few coats of clear coat on them every now and then.
