A survey of ex-cons asked them what instilled the most fear during a break-in.

Answer: The racking of a shotgun

I'm a single mom living out in the boonies, easily seen from the highway. I have a 20 gauge that sleeps next to me, not loaded though. I think a handgun would be better, but even though my son KNOWS to leave the guns alone, I feel like he would have a much harder time shooting himself with a shotgun than a handgun.

I also have a weatherby .223 for my hunting gun. I shoot stuff all the time. Good way to take out aggression.

    So my answer was both.

Does anyone have a reliable statistic of how many burglars are armed? Curious. I would personally rather scare a would be buglar into running then tear him up with rounds.

i dont...but around here...i could easily say 8/10 burglaries occur during the daytime while no one is home...

the chances of you getting face to face with one is very slim...

Personally i dont worry so much about shooting one...but i make damn sure my renters insurance is always up to date and i lock all my guns and such up in my safe when i leave my apt

all my extra checkbooks/credit cards/ss card/etc etc are all in my safe

I work at cell towers in all locations - Day, Night, Rural, Urban. You name it. I carry.

There's all kinds of dangers out there. Most of the adult gangbangers out there will just look for money and will get out of your way. Its the 15 year old kids who are looking for street cred that are your biggest worries. That and the guys who are strung out on meth looking to roll you so they can pawn your tools.

One of our employees in another region was working at night at a particularly bad site and couldn't lock himself in the tower compound. He had his back turned to the gate working on the RF equipment when someone came up behind him and put the point of a knife in his back. he couldn't retreat because there was a large computer rack in front of him so he put his hands up, told the guy to be cool and he would hand over his tool bag and his wallet inside.

He reached into his tool bag, pulled out his piece, spun around quickly, and shot his attacker in the chest, killing him.

I did hear from a carrying buddy of mine that in the average attack, the victim first notices the attacker at 9-11 ft and fires an average of 1.8 shots.

I was stopped for speeding and the officer ask to step out of the car, which in Texas they normally ask me to stay in the car. I gave the officer my Lic and CCW lic(which we are now required to do) The officer ask if I had a pistol on me. I told him which hip it was on and that there was one in the door. The officer said that most people that have a CCW that he asked do not have one with them. He said it does them no good if they do not carry it and thanked me for telling him I was carrying.......I still got the ticket and told him to have a nice day. Wife was mad as heck that I told him to have nice day but he was doing his job and I was speeding.

My guns are used for hunting, protection as well as a statement of my constitutional rights. I have never needed to draw my gun (stateside anyways), and I hope I never have to. That being said, I'd rather have it and not need it, than need one and not have it.

    My collection:
Sig P238 in 380 (my carry gun)
Springfield XD 4" in 9mm (nightstand gun)
    S&W M&P15 in 223 (training/home protection/fun gun)
Remington 700 SPS tactical in 308 (hunting/ long range platform)
Remington 11-87 SPS 12 GA. (Hunting)
    Henry Lever in 17HMR (Hunting)
Stevens semi-auto .22 cal (inherited and retired)

As someone already stated, guns are tools, and you need the right tool for the job. Yes there are guns that may cover both rolls, but i'd rather have one built for the job. just my 2 cents

i hate that phrase because it sounds like the constitution is giving you something when it isnt...its only a restraint on govt and the rights are inherent in our humanity ;)
