proud dad and the most exciting 15 minutes ever

i am not sure where to even start. i do not think i have ever been this excited.
i have 3 children ages 5, 7, and 9 they all want to hunt, the problem is what and where? the other problem is there ages, a lot of places will not let them hunt they are to young. a friend of mine Dave had told me about a Washington hunt with no age restrictions. so after talking with Dave about this Washington hunt i decided i would let the kids decide if they wanted to try this year, just my 7 and 9 year old, they said can we go now! i had a quick laugh and told them no we had a lot of work to do, first they needed to pass hunters education, second they needed to practice there shooting a lot.
in august i put on a hunters education class which they both attended and passed (i think i was harder on them then the other kids). we had also gotten them a Remington 770 youth 243. from the beginning my daughter (the nine year old) was an incredible shooter, her bother was not far behind. thanks to another friend of mine Chris white we got some good hand-loads dialed in for the gun so now it was time to go hunt.
fast forward to this last Thursday the truck was loaded and at 8:30 am we were on the road headed to endicott Washington. once we arrived we got camp up and got ready to hunt. in the mean time a few others had shown up. my friend Dave, with his kids were there, a few minutes later one of my best friends came down from Hayden Idaho to hunt for the evening with us. then a few others arrived in camp also. after everyone was settled a plan was hatched and off we went. Dave and his daughter Krystal went to the top of some rim rock, Daves son Dustin went with us (as our guide) and one of the other hunters (chuck) lead the way. as we approached the spot we were supposed to park at (then hike to the area we were to watch) chuck spotted some deer in the field. he stopped us and i got out to talk with him. i asked if he wanted to take one of the does but he said it was a little to far for him (he is a senior hunter). with full faith in the kids i told him they could shoot that far and asked if he minded if the kids took a shot. he replied of course not so i grabbed Cody (we had a coin toss to see who would go first Cody won) i grabbed the gun and the sneak was on. there was a little hump i wanted to make it to so he could lay down and shoot. we got to the spot and i through the gun down on the BI-POD. a quick range told me the deer was 152 yards, the biggest problem was they would not hold still. i think it was less then 5 minutes but it felt like 20 minutes as we lay there waiting for the right shot. i think i had to tell him to take his finger off the trigger like 10 times. once the deer moved up a little embankment and stopped to eat some apples i asked him if he was on her he said yes so i said go ahead (i think i only got the go out) and boom! all i see if the deer fold up and roll down the hill. i jumped up and started to yell, he jumped up we hi fived hugged then the whole crew comes out of hiding. my buddy, daughter, Dustin, and chuck as we are congratulating him my friend say "the other one is still here"!!! holy crap she stuck around, i grab mckenna and get her on the gun. the doe was running around not knowing what to do, after a few minutes she stops, quick range she is 200 i ask mckenna if she is on her she said yes, i tell her to hold a little high and let it go. BOOM and down goes deer number 2. i could not believe my eyes now 10-15 into the hunt and 2 dead deer dropped in there tracks. while this was happening Dave and Krystal had crested the hill and were watching from the rim rock so they got to see a lot of it.
i do not think i could have been more proud or excited then i was at this moment. my 2 oldest kids on there first hunt doing it on there own, all i did was talk them through it they did the rest on there own.

Cody hit his just in front of the shoulder (it was a slight quartering shot) and came out the neck on the off side perfect height a little forward but not much and it worked.
mckenna hit her's a little high (i guess the bullets do not drop like a thought my fault) but she still hit good enough to take out both lungs and the spin (just like my archery shot this year) in mckenna's picture you can see the entrance it is the little very lite patch of red behind the shoulder about half way up.
the next day we glassed to see if we could help find Krystal a doe, and see if we could find any coyotes for the 7 mag to bark at

we ended up leaving Saturday mid morning to head home the weather had turned but it was a great trip for us to say the least, i hope the others there had as good of time as we did.
a special thanks to Dave for getting us on the property. chuck for passing up an opportunity so my kids could have one, Dustin for the guide services, and Chris for the custom ammo.

I have 0 problem with hunting as long as the meat is frozen and eaten. If you kill it you should make full use of it. Killing animals just for kicks and not using any part of it except the head to put over the mantle place irks me. Although 99% of hunters have more respect for wildlife than most people but there are always the odd ones out.

Congrats brother!! Gave me chills. My 10 year old girl got her first deer and turkey this year at nine and I could just feel your excitement all over again. Great great job kids!!!...and pops too.

I'm very proud of Indiana that we have an apprentice license which does not restrict any youngen from hunting at any age as long as the appropriate laws are followed.
