Remington 700 ????????

did anyone else watch MSNBC on sunday night about the remington 700? very interesting IMO. has anyone every had a faulty safety situation with the 700? other firearms?

 

I watched it also. Very very scary to know that they have had so many reports and complaints with no attempt to alter or redesign what seems to be a potentially defective and deadly gun.

 

I need a link to the msnbc airing. I have a remmy 700 and so far I haven't had any prob with it.

 

will- from what i watched the 700 has a faulty trigger system that can engage when the safety is activated to clear the chamber. i hope i worded that correctly.

thank you jab. there was a lot more to it on tv. this problem could have been fixed back in the early 40s but remmy didnt want to spend the money. to bad cause its one of the best rifles out there.

No problem. And yes I think people being careless is a big part of it. BUT the icing on the cake for me was when they interviewed the man who designed the gun and he said he recognized the possible defect within the first 200 guns produced, and pleaded with Remington to alter the design and they refused to because it would cost an extra 5.5 cents per gun.

 

Well it ends up that this was all way over done and saw an article on field and stream saying msnbc is pretty much full of it.

 

Funny thing is I heard about this the same day my brand spanking new ACR from Bushmaster got recalled. Seems that in some instances the rifle shoots off multiple rounds when only squeezing the trigger once.......
To me that is just plain old fun not a defect.

And I know there are alot of complaints about the 700 malfunction, but think about how many hundreds of thousands of those rifles are being used everyday...and that's just here in Nebraska. haha

Any firearm that is improperly maintained or that has had it's trigger improperly adjusted can go off unexpectedly.
Not to mention that the trigger components wear and eventually will wear out.
Just like a car or truck, a firearm requires regular maintenance and inspection, especially a firearm that has been modified or that is fired frequently.

 

i never had an issue with mine. of course i dont think i have ever tried to pull the trigger while the safety was on.... but it is a good shootin rifle. not as good as my pre 64 model 70 but still pretty damn accurate out to about 400 yards

 

more than "5 million have been made" and there have only been "two dozen deaths and more than 100 injuries"....... CNBC can fuck off.
Ive loved all of my Rem 700's and never had any problems with any of them, neither has anyone Ive known with a 700 had any problems.
The fucking cardinal rule of guns is "treat every gun as if its loaded" if more assholes would live by this there would a hell of a lot less problems

EDIT: and I have tried to pull the trigger with the safety on...while deer hunting i forgot to take the safety off but guess what it didnt go boom

she shot her own kid b/c she "was certain her finger was not on the trigger" you better be 10000 fucking % sure...

 

cnbc is full of it. bottom line is this follow the 10 commandments of shooting and you should be good.
the other thing is Both Remington and experts hired by trial lawyers have conducted testing on guns returned from the field which were claimed to have fired without a trigger pull, and neither has ever been able to duplicate such an event on guns which had been properly maintained and which had not been altered after sale.

I just bought a second 700 the other day. Screw CNBC, like others have said follow all safety rules (not just rely on the mechanical safety) and 99.9% of accidents will be avoided. A safety is a man made mechanism, it can fail - anyone who has had any sort of firearms instruction knows this.

 

I remember reading up on it years ago when I was into guns.

The Remington-Walker triggers didn't have a problem firing when the trigger was pulled and the safety was on.
The problem happened when the safety was on and it was moved to the off position and the gun fired without having any finger on the trigger.

This was a flaw built into the design because if you pulled the trigger with the safety on and then released the trigger occasionally the connector DID NOT return to the original position along with the trigger and that leads to a condition where the connector was being held by the sear, so as soon as the safety was pushed off their was nothing to stop it from firing even though no finger was on the trigger at that moment.

 

^ interesting but Ive owned several 700's and have had zero problems with any of them...nor has my grandapa who was a die hard remington 700 fan...he was a gun smith hobbiest who build tons of these for people with zero problems.
