FN-Scar-H or FN-Scar-L (no call of duty crap)

So i plan to buy one of these two guns. if any of you have either one of these two any input would be appreciated. I plan to use it for recreational/ defense purposes, meaning to go shoot at the range and to take to the ranch as protection. I've shot with a 7.62 cal rifle and i am not pleased with the recoil, but i like its power. I've shot with a 5.56 and i love the control i have of the gun, but will that be enough stopping power for small game, maybe even deer?. Thanks

 

Some states I know have regulations regarding what size bullet you can use to shoot certain animals..I'm sure 5.56/.223 has the knock down power for a deer but it may not be an authorized caliber for deer in your state.

 

I've never been overly impressed with the 7.62x39 cartridge, either in SKS or AK platforms. Seems to me if you want the trajectory and power of a 30-30, a lever action works every time with more accuracy. The only issue is you can't buy cheap surplus 30-30 ammo.
For varminting a .223 works as well as you might need, but I have, like Aaron, seen minimum caliber requirements for deer in some states- .30, if I remember right.

 

The 5.56/.223 will do the job ( I prefer to shoot heavier loads 65-85gr.), if you want stopping power, go for a 7.62mm, your not goig full auto and recoil isn't that bad with these platforms. If your worried about it, grab a good bipod and prone out or bench the weapon before you fire.

Are you refering to 7.62 Nato, or what is commonly refered to as .308 Winchester or 7.62 Combloc as Dimonback is refering to?

I purchased an "H" and sold it, then purchased one of the green "H" models that were made in very limited numbers. Sold it for a sizeable profit and turned that loot into a pair of Springfield M1A's.

Sooner or later the Bushmaster ACR's will have the 6.8 Remington, and 7.62 Combloc kits available either from Remington/Bushmaster or from the aftermarket community which may offer you another alternative. I know that a .22 Long Rifle conversion is already in the works from the aftermarket community.

I hope that in the end you find yourself owning the perfect rifle for you.

 

If you don't like the 308 round, then your choice is pretty clear. 5.56 ammo is going to be a lot cheaper and will make a great coyote round. I don't know if TX allows you to hunt with the 5.56 but it would be about the minimum power leve you would want for a deer. Your deer are small bodied though...plenty of big MO whitetails have fallen to .223/5.56mm.

I've shot the SCAR in semi and full auto and it's very controllable, though more bulky than the AR-15 platform. If I were you, I'd spend $1000 on a quality AR-15 and pocket the other $1200 or so.

Ahhh, I should have looked at your age... RVS was an old online PC game / First Person Shooter... it had a device known as a heartbeat sensor, as your previous post mentioned.

None of the counties ive hunted in TX had a minimun bullet weight. so 5.56 would/should be fine

 

Are you getting the FN SCAR at a good price? Last I heard these rifles were going for rather civilian-unfriendly pricetags of $2000 or more.

 

I'd do with the .308, its a much better deer round then a 5.56, but I'd take a 5.56 over a .308 for defense because of the very manageable recoil. A 5.56 is very likely to wound, but not kill a deer.
