Home Defense: 9mm Semi-auto or 7.62x39mm AK-47?

For my home defense a 12gauge and a 40cal semi auto among other guns.
But if I had to choose between the AK and the 9mm. I would take the 9mm it is much better for close quarters combat.

 

9mm For me loaded with 147gr. Federal HST's. Would be better with frangibles but I trust the Federals a bit more.

Fact is I live in a rough place and just got rid of my AR since I figred it was a bit "overkill". Last time someone broke into my house, the 9mm scared him just fine.

Shot placement and accuracy is all you need. 2 in the chest as close as you can and 1 in the T box

With that being said. I prefer the 9mm even tho I don't own one anymore.

 

Has anyone stopped to discuss the situation with the intruder? I mean, what if he accidentally broke into your house and just wants to share half of your stuff which should rightfully be his? Perhaps he/she had a rough upbringing and just needs your TV and jewelry to get his life on track. If you just talk it out with the intruder, maybe you can form a lasting bond with him and become BBQ buddies. I mean, you never know until your try. If he beats the shit out of you, then the police will be there shortly, curl into a ball and take it until he is tired and the police can take the winded subject into custody and feed him for a couple of days.

On the other hand, if he comes into my house, I'm slinging 00 buck at him from a Remington 870.

I would say it's all very subjective based on where you live. Rural v.s. City Communist v.s. Free state etc. In rural Goergia you could probably wield a shorter barrel semi-auto rifle like an AK or an AR without too much fear of shooting a neighbor. The great advantage is if you're a bad shot you have up to 30 rounds, the fear factor of the black rifle assuming an intruder has time to see it and the stopping power of a high velocity rifle round. In the city there is no way you would want high velocity rounds flying around. In a city like Chicago you are going to jail probably longer than the bad guy if you defend your life, family or property. From an all round point of view a semi auto or pump action shotgun makes the most sense, with the S&W Governor, Taurus Judge a close second. You really don't even have to aim just start shooting in the general direction and your have allot of ammo choices. I have a Saiga 20g since I live in a suburban area. I still keep an Taurus 4" 44 special as back up bed side just in case. I shoot it super accurate up to 15-20 yards static shooting, so 7-10 yards under stress should be achievable and a nice heavy sub sonic round.

 

I know this thread is old, but between the 2 I'd go with a 9mm. I keep my glock 9mm on my nightstand and my 12g in the corner next to it. The 12g is my go-to gun if I hear anything. Once I have kids though they won't be out in the open and harder to get to so I may end up just grabbing the glock since it's smaller.

 

I'm late to this convo, but 9mm for sure. The AK round will exit most residences and travel to the next neighborhood. At short distance, both have lethal mass, but stumbling around in the dark and wielding an AK is like driving a semi truck through NYC. Not to mention any 9MM pistol has a better magazine reload regiment...where an AK requires a specific "rocking of the magazine into battery" that only conditioned AK owners can do under extreme pressure.

A good 9MM can be kept in a night stand with almost the same amount of repetitive magazine firepower, whilst an AK has to be ran-to in the closet and racked. 9mm, .45, .357 etcc or shotgun are the only guns to truly use for home defense.

A pistol is good but lets not forget as Americans and responsible gun owners training and practice only makes that gun an effective tool. Protect your family and Constitution.

 

I didn't vote on a particular gun. The gun you shoot the best under stress is the gun you want. That said, we keep the 870 near the bed. Personally, if I heard someone rack a shotgun, I'd figure I only have seconds to live. But, I'm not a criminal and don't know any.

 

personally youd be shot because then they know exactly where you are and where to shoot at and you didnt come prepared to a gun fight..

The AK is way overkill in a home defense situation. A full size semi-auto handgun is what I think would be the best option, although I prefer .40S&W over 9mm. That's why there's a S&W M&P in my nightstand.

 

Of the two, i'll say 9mm. I know that placement is more important than caliber. I don't want the over penetration of the 7.62 round because i have family in the house. In terms of CQB, the ease of a handgun would be beneficial as well.

Now if I was protecting my property, like in a disaster situation, I'd want the 7.62 as it would be a little bit better for doing damage at range...especially to vehicles/atv's

 

I'd get a home defense shot gun, and have it pre-loaded (if you don't have kids in your house). The sound of you cocking the gun will make the criminal run like a little girl haha
