I dont even know the legality of civilians using less-lethal ammo...but in general...for purposes other than LE use...I'd suggest keeping the same mindset whether youre using less-lethal or regular ammo...

Less-lethal can still very easily kill someone...especially with a misplaced shot

So...you're in bed...half asleep...dirtbag kicks open your door...you jump up and grab the shotgun loaded up with some beanbags...you fire off a round or 2...striking him smack dab in the middle of the face...and he keels over and dies

you're still in the same boat that you would've been had you had regular buckshot or whatnot in the firearm

Personally, without talking to a lawyer...i'd say if you cant do it with real ammo...dont do it with less-lethal ammo

Do you have any friends or relatives who are defense attorneys? Check with them...you'll get the best, most definitive answers on when, how, and why you can use firearms (in whatever manner you please) to defend yourself

I feel tigerfan00 is correct in advising you to steer clear of, or at the least, educate yourself about liability laws in the fruit n nut state. I would recommend #4 shot in a highbrass shell. This way overpenetration into a few drywall walls (I'm assuming you have drywall walls) will be limited to 4 or so sheets without exiting the interior walls and injuring someone else. Plus the wound cavity would be so large at close range there is no way the lawbreaker would survive....he'd probably bleed out rather quickly. just my 2 cents.

high brass shotgun ammo is in reference to the high brass neck at the base of the shell to accomodate the higher powder load

just an idea, i dont know if it would help you at all if it ended up going to court, but maybe have a bean bag or some other less lethal round as your first shot, and then most likely if the round doesnt stop them have buckshot right behind it.

Last time I checked civys can have beanbags and rubber bullets (that was awhile ago though). He is very correct about killing someone with a bad shot.

If you have never been hit by a bean bag or rubber bullets it HURTS!! Ive been hit by a bean bag but not by rubber bullets.

Personally since you are living in CA, I would get a Tazer.

    X26c http://taser.com/products/personal-safety/taser-x26c

Only down side is you only have one shot, then dry stun...

So you have to be on your toes and a good shot...

Anyway thats why I live in a place where if someone breaks into my house, I can pull the trigger...

    My recommendations...............

Contact the police and the District Attorney's office (in writing) and have a neighboorhood meeting to discuss the situation.

Ask the DA's office for an opinion (record the conversation or get the opinion in writing) on self defense measures taken within your residence.
Have someone take notes and document the meeting and what was said by who (whom).

For civilians, I'm not a big fan of less than lethal force.......as cops, we are trained in it, and you practice all the time, and you usually have lots of help......for you, having a bad guy in your house is a bad thing, having a bad guy in your house pissed off after being hit with a beanbag is a really bad thing.

Most burglars are dopers and when they break into your house, they are probably on dope and may be armed with some type of weapon. Don't try and reason with them.

As a civilian, for home defense, I would use # 4 buckshot.......more pellets......go to the range and practice, no distances more than 25 feet.

Personally, I do have a shotgun by my bed loaded with #4 buckshot (first 4 rounds) then 2 slugs, however after lots of practice and training I'm not sure that a shotgun would be the first choice best weapon in a residence (unless the barrel was really short)........my Glock 23 (.40 caliber) is what I would grab first.

Oh, and about shooting (at) people........

Take a CCW course, even if you do not get the permit.

Everybody in your house should be familiar with the weapons you have in the house, and know where they are and how to use them.

This ain't the movies......you can't aim for a leg or shoulder shot......always go for the center of mass.

Don't let an intruder get close to you.

A warning shot may be a great deterrent, especially at night (remember to close your eyes......it's gonna be bright and loud)......learn how to repair drywall....lol.

If you have to shoot, remember that you fear for your safety and the safety of your family.

Remember.......larger holes (in the target) are better than smaller holes, and more holes are better than less holes.

In law enforcement, we do not shoot to kill or wound, we shoot until the threat ceases

    Identify the threat
    Honor the threat
    Engage the threat
    Continue engagement until threat ceases

    Good Luck!!!!

    YMMV (your mileage may vary)

During my short time living in California, I found the best case scenario to be stay put in your bedroom or between them and your children's rooms. I know that Texas has a no retreat Castle Doctrine(so dude kicks in my door he is being met with 12 gauge homeloads or my 1911), I am unsure of California but if it is what I think it is then you must retreat until you can not retreat any further. So if you keep yourself in your room shotgun aimed at the door you have retreated as far as you can. Things in your house can be replaced, the lives of family and yourself can not be replaced. If they make the move to enter your bedroom where you have no escape from, in my eyes that is a threat upon my life.

Now this is all from my perspective, I am by no stretch of the imagination a lawyer or expert on self defense lawsuits or tactics. I have just taken situations I have been in and used them to form my own plan of action should something happen. So please research these things before acting, that being said if you feel your life is in danger then do what you need to in order to protect it.

I don't understand why a citizen would want to carry non-lethal ammo for home defense- there's a reason why indoor ranges that allow shotguns usually require you to purchase their own ammo- nonlethal rounds can be extremely dangerous to EVERYONE in the vicinity when fired indoors. If you are using a shotgun for home defense I wouldn't go past birdshot. The sound of a shotgun going off indoors, pointed at you, is enough to cripple a man.

#1 - if you're not willing to kill someone, why did you buy the gun? there are plenty of non-lethal weapons available.

#2 - there are no "non-lethal" rounds, just less lethal. If you look them up, almost all of them say not to shoot closer than 5-7 yards (ie, down the hall) because the rounds are ... wait for it ... lethal.

I grew up in SoCal. I know their restrictions.

Just remember they can be just as deadly,

Shoot if I lived in CA. If I owned my home (dont know what your situation is).

I'd invest in some good home security, A solid door for front and back and something for the windows.

I remember at a fire school we tried to force a solid door (forgot what kind) with 2 dead bolts, we could it but it wasnt easy...

If I was inside and heard someone hitting that door like we were you would know it!!

Criminals are mostly scared bitches, they want easy victims.

Sometimes that is unavoidable. You will be detained regardless of whether it was legal or justified shooting or not. If you are serious about it have a good attorney who knows the specifics about home defense and self defense shootings. Or atleast have a name and number of one.

I completely agree. Just need to be ready for the consequences of your actions. I know the NRA has a CCW/CHL(whatever its called in your state) insurance. You pay into it and after a shooting incident they will contact a local lawyer who supports them and will be sent to defend you.
