My wife has a kimber ultra carry .45 with crimson trace grips. Hates shooting it and shoots only enough to stay proficient.

.45 in your dominant hand and a S&W 500Mag in the other.
Walk into the dark room, close your eyes, fire the 500.

The intruder is now blind and deaf. Shoot him with your .45.

    S&W500.... the poor man's flash-bang ;)

Cheaper, more available, and more legal for civilians than a flash-bang ;)

FWIW ... I love my Ruger P345 (45ACP). Think it comes down to what you can afford (or are willing to spend), what fits you well, and most importantly what you can shoot accurate consistently. IMHO

iirc in NC you have to have a permit to purchase a pistol or your CCW so id go ahead and get that out of the way now...

In the military they are bound by the Hague Accords to only use ball ammo when fighting the military of another nation. I hope if you are using this for home protection you spend the extra $ to get expanding ammo.

With current high quality expanding ammo... 9mm expanding can get the job done as well or better than .45 ball ammo.

will have to go down to the courthouse and get my permit yes.

cool deal, will let you know. . im probably going with a 9mm though and i don't think im gonna buy it till around june when im out of school and working again. . . . im not one of those "stopping power" fanatics. im not buying a pistol cause im itching to shoot someone, i just want one. that's why im probably going to get a 9mm, though i haven't ruled out .40 either. ive just never been a great shot with a .45, the bullets are expensive, and it just seems overkill for me right now. or at least that's what im telling myself.

I like 40 caliber pistols because you can get a 357 sig barrel(uses your 40 caliber mags) and you can get 9mm mags and a barrel and shoot 9mm and have 3 different calibers in one gun

9mm and .45 are good choices I would stay away from any of the oddball calibers just for the sake of ammo availability. In general stick with calibers used by the military simply bc they are going to be easily avaliable and cheaper. As far as "stopping power" goes no round sold will push someone back just not enough mass. Buy what you like and practice with it. If you can hit what you are aiming at caliber doesnt matter. Personally I prefer the .45 bigger bullet=more tissue damage. If I shoot someone or something its not to scare it off its because I want it dead.

If doesn't matter what gun you carry if you can't handle it in a stressful situation. Pick a gun that you like and are comfortable with handling on a daily basis. Even the mere presence of a gun can enough to deter crime/violence.

I'm going through the same decision making process. My buddy thinks .45, because although you're saying it's for home defense, and recreation, if you're ever out in the woods and a bear or something similar charges you, good luck with a 9mm. .45 has more scare tactic too.
