I hate the term ultimate when it comes to guns, ammo, and home defense

    There is no such thing

what works great for 1 person can be terrible for someone else

I'll always love my 1911s. Not because I'm the kind of guy who thinks that a bigger round is better, I just personally like the feel and quality etc. . . But if someone likes their 9mil more power to ya. Shoot an intruder with a .22 and he's not going to laugh and say haha you should have bought a .45

for HD I personally like Hi round count and a gun that I am very comfortable using.

    xd40 with attached light :D

    to each their own.

If you get that revolver and can shoot it accuratly and fast and are comfortable with it, then by all means use it! Whatever you buy you will want lots of trigger time with it so you can develope muscule memory. that way if the time comes to use it will be second nature.

I was big on round count at first but the more i thought about the more i figured, if I'm in a situation where I'm going through all four of my 8 round clips I'm obviously just going for my rifle ha if an intruder doesn't bolt or drop after a few rounds that dude is crazy

That's what I have always said. If you go through more than 15 rounds, most of the time you are the one to blame for putting yourself in that situation. Obviously there are exceptions.

Ought to remove that light it gives intruders your location and a target to shoot at. I believe that you should be able to clear the house in the dark so that you have the element of surprise.
This. I wouldn't think about using anything other than my G22 .40 or my 12 gauge for HD if, god forbid, the need be.

I clear dozens if houses as a police officer. That is probably the worst home defense handgun possible. The things that make the best handgun would be as follows...

Reliability. Obviously the most important. Reliability trumps accuracy... the gun's accuracy is not the limiting factor, the shooter is.

A weapon mounted light. This is the next most important thin. Anyone who thinks otherwise is in fantasy land. You must ID your target and you will not be sneaking up on anyone. You are not a ninja assassin.

Some form of night sights... the longer the sight radius the better. A laser can help here too. I use both. I am a huge advocate of Crimson Trace lasers. Lasers require their own dedicated training and are not a substitute for iron sights with tritium inserts.

A trigger that is not a heavy long stroke double action. Traditional DA triggers are slower and result in lower accuracy under stress.

Low recoil. Not a compact. Compacts have more muzzle rise. Heavier calibers usually require more attetion to things like slide weight and bore axis.

Ammunition that is capable of adequate expansion and penetration. Adequate capacity. Fir home defense you likely won't have more than the ammo in the gun and at most a dual spare mag holder. If you are not likely to grab the mag holder, you need more than a 10 round magazine.

Capable of fast magazine changes... in case of malfunction more so than reloading.

The above is a high recoil, non tritium rear sighted, low capacity, slow reloading, DA handgun with no provision for a weapon light. Its almost the perfect antithesis of the perfect home defense handgun.

outside of the weapon mounted light/laser i'm in agreement

I do like the idea of having a light...but i want it off center from my body...just in case...plus at work we arent allowed weapon mounted lights unless we are K9 so i get to train repeatedly on using a flashlight and pistol

FN 5.7 - extremely low recoil. Easy for a girl to shoot if need be. Holds 20 rounds. I have two of them. It'd suck for the person on the receiving end.
