I am probably going to get yelled at for multi posting this but this just re-affirms my belief that a dog is the best home defense you can get!!!

So I get a call today about 2 a.m. west coast time (about 1:30 p.m. Saudi Arabia time where i am currently at) from my EX. She is living in my house in Vancouver Washington since we broke up because she dosent pay rent but take care of the place for me and watches my dog while I am traveling and essentially living in Tucson.

Well long story short she was asleep on the couch and my dog DJ (12 year old chocolete lab, he is in perfect health and shape) was upstairs in the master bedroom in his bed asleep. Some guy busted the latch on my rear sliding glass door and came into the house. He couldnt see her asleep on the couch because it faces away from the door. He walked past her up to my T.V. and she woke up for some reason.

She saw him, jumped up, and screamed bloody murder. She was between him and the rear door so he grabbed her and hit her hard in the face to nock her out of the way. As soon as she screamed my lab came down stairs barking and snarling on a rampage. As the guy nocked her down my lab layed into the guys leg and tore him open. He got one good kick in on my lab and busted 2 ribs before he got out and away.

Cops showed up and my lab wanted nothing to do with them. She had to lock him in a back room until he calmed down because he wanted someone else's ass something fierce protecting her and the house. They brought K-9 out and tracked the guy down. Apparently there have been a couple home invasions in the area lately and think it was all him. They found him a half block away with some serious damage to his calf and had to take him to the hospital. Kelly my ex went to the hospital and other than a little bruising and bloody nose she is fine. My dog is sore as hell as well with a few broken ribs but he is definately the hero of the week!!!

Probably both luckily and unluckily I was not home as I have a pistol in my bedside drawer and also in the coffee table next to where I sit down stairs and I would have definately used one of them. Also the dog wouldnt have gone upstairs if I was home. He never leaves my side so he would have been downstairs and probably heard the guy come in initially.

So lets hear it for my boy, DJ. The hero of the week!!! I love this dog more than anything else. He has been with me since I bought him while living in Japan in 2000. He has been there with me as I came back from war 3 times. He is always excited and loves to see me no matter if I am gone 5 minutes or 5 months. He is my best friend!!!

Glad nobody was seriously hurt. That could have gone terribly wrong had the guy had a knife or gun. I love my dog too. Definitely agree that a big, barking, biting animal will scare away most home invaders after some goods.

Yea, thanks guys. 99.9% of the time my dog is a big pussy and does not have a mean bone in his body. He knows his jobs are to retrieve birds (or anything else that falls from the sky), bark when someone comes to my house, and alert me when something isnt right. When I leave him with my ex (or mom before that) he goes into protector mode when I am not around.

Its just comforting to know he is there. Agreed it could have gone wrong but luckily the guy was looking for something easy to steal and pawn, my PS3 & Xbox probably as thats the area he was heading for.

The cops found him. With him bleeding and snow on the ground in Vancouver the K9 unit was on him in a heart beat.

You've got an awsome dog there. Not all dogs have that in them though.

Last week I responded to a residential burglary. I met the complainant and checked out the house. I went into the living room and see a large brindle pit about 60-70lbs. I love dogs, but not knowing the temperment of this dog I was a little nervous. The dog came up and licked me and then layed down. I asked the owner if the dog was home when the burglary occured and she stated yes. The dog sure looked the part, but def. wasn't no guard dog.

Yea, he is. There is no doubt about that. He might not have a ton of fight in him or the meanest bite but he has a nice deep bark and knows when something isnt right. If I am around he is very submissive as he knows I am the boss and protector but when I am gone he knows its his job to protect the house. When away from the house he is a typical lab. But at the house, he is on gaurd!

Yea, he is a beast. I know if I asked him to go hunting right now he would suck it up and totally be up for it. I ran him over with my dirt bike once in Hawaii and he was hurt but he wouldnt leave my side. I had to pick him up and drape him over the tank of my dirt bike to get him back to my truck but every time I got up to go he would power through it and try to follow me. He is a trooper and dosent whine an ounce.

I would so make him some awesome food if I was home. He already got some good pain meds and a few extra cookies and I told her to let me him sleep in my bed. He loves to sleep in my spot while I am gone but I yell at her for letting him do it. He gets to do it for a few nights. I am sure i will have to break him of it once I get home but its no biggie, he is worth it.
