Published: Sunday, March 25, 2012 at 4:18 p.m.

As they are before most worship services, the doors of Boiling Springs' South Side Freewill Baptist Church were open on Sunday morning.
The Rev. Henry Guyton, pastor of the church, said Jesse Gates, who has attended worship services at the church on Upper Valley Falls Road as recently as Wednesday, came to the door about 10 a.m. on Sunday.
“He came in before the service and acted like he was having a heart attack,” Guyton, 71, said. “He asked us to call Channel 7 news. I called 911 instead.”

Sheriff Chuck Wright said deputies and Spartanburg EMS arrived, and checked out Gates, and Gates left.

About 11:20 a.m., Jesse Gates returned to the church. The Rev. Guyton's grandson, Aaron Guyton, 26, was in the recreation building separate from the church and saw Gates get a shotgun from the trunk of his car.

Woman who surprised attackers with gun talks to News 4
Robbers flee when shot is fired
UPDATED 12:00 AM EDT Apr 04, 2012

LANDRUM, S.C. - A woman who had just finished doing overnight work in a Landrum business on Saturday was assaulted by two men, but ended up turning the tables on them when she pulled out a gun and shot at them.

On Tuesday she talked first to News 4, and she said that it was the first and only time she had ever put the gun in her back pocket -- and at first, she didn't even remember she had it with her.
For her protection, the woman's name is not being revealed.
The 41-year-old woman had left through the back door of her business at about 1 a.m. She said she got her car from the parking lot, and pulled up to the back door to retrieve an umbrella she had left inside. She said when she stepped back outside, two men confronted her.
She said when she asked the men what they wanted, one of them jerked her necklace off and the other man tore her earrings out of her ears.
The woman said that the men shoved her up against the door and told her to open it and get inside. She said when she refused and told them the door was locked, one man ...

cato institute has a report out on civilian gun use for self defense:

Quote:
Tough Targets: When Criminals Face Armed Resistance from Citizens
By Clayton Cramer and David Burnett

Executive Summary
Description:
This special publication uses an extensive collection of news reports from over an eight-year period to survey the circumstances and outcomes of defensive gun uses in America. Federal and state lawmakers often oppose repealing or amending laws governing the ownership or carrying of guns. That opposition is often based on assumptions that the average citizen is incapable of successfully employing a gun in self-defense or that possession of a gun in public will tempt people to violence in contentious situations.

Those assumptions, illustrated in this report, are false. Such cases are an exceedingly small minority of gun uses by otherwise law-abiding citizens and a great number of tragedies-murders, rapes, assaults, robberies-have been thwarted by self-defense gun uses. The vast majority of gun owners are ethical and competent ...
