^^ sure is! I have a Remington 700 sps. I'm gona twist up some bullets here pretty soon, should be getting around 3300 fps with triple shocks.

I'd confidently rip through a Canadian moose with this little sniper. And talk about a nice flat shot!

I am into my gun and a beautiful Nikon 3x9 scope, and sling for under a grand.

Forgot to throw this into the original post, I have a tight budget. I can't drop 800 on a nice setup rifle, I am looking for a cheaper gun to start with.

I'm hoping to hunt deer and elk in the fall, as well as coyote and maybe even bear. I have a cabin in the mountains and its prime hunting ground for everything. I already have a shotgun for turkey and different birds.

Check out the Savages. My son shoots a 7mm-08 an I paid under $400 brand new for it. Real nice piece for the price.

how much are you wanting to spend I just picked up a marlin xl7 in 30-06, and i shoots great very smooth action and a nice adjustable trigger with the same setup as savages accu trigger. I paid about 330, and did alot of research for the best rifle i could find for under 400 and it came between that or the stevens 200.

I don't think he needs a 300 win mag, most people don't need a gun that big imo.

What do you plan to hunt, also take a walk through the ammo section of your local gun shop. Ammo prices are a consideration if you do a lot of shooting. I love my .270, it will knock down a deer and ammo isnt too bad although I can put a lot more ammo through my .22 for a Hell of a lot less

^^ Ummm no. Not the holy grail...

Anyways OP look at Savages they are the best bargin for accuracy and funcatiality especially on a budget. As for a .308 vrs 30-06 thats a personal choice I have a 30-06 and it has always worked for me but the .308 will work on just about anything as well. Look at ammo prices before you buy.

I picked up a Savage model 111 in 30-06 last year for $350 and love it. Came with a cheap scope (gets the job done tho) but plan on upgrading this season.

that's also a death wish on the shoulder. my brother has that exact set up, it kicks way too hard to comfortably shoot. an ultralight gun in a big caliber is asking for a flinch.

a 270 or 30-06 will do just fine. 300's are great but are not for going to the range to just target shoot. Everyone that owns a 300 that I know of shoots it just enough to sight it in.
