As one gun writer likes to point out, the AR is a pretty fun plinker. Many high ranking military types find it to be severely lacking as a battle rifle. It's only in use in so many nations (as is the 5.56 round) because the USA shoved it down their throats.
100 million+ AKs have been made. In service still in dozens of nations. The USA is one of the big players as far as dealing in these things. A Russian schoolboy can strip one down in less than 40 seconds. The simplest peasant soldier can keep it functioning. The few cleaning supplies needed can fit in the palm of your hand. Dependable as hell. A few of the original Russian made milled reciever AK47s are still being used today. The average world-wide cost of one is only about $250. Simple, reliable. Accurate? On a spray and pray battlefield, that's hardly relevant.
So who has a variant of Mikhail Timofeyevich Kalashnikov's creation?
(perhaps only a few here own a genuine Avtomat Kalashnikova- which is the full-auto/selective fire original)
