I think I'm going to buy a dog as soon as I find the breed I want in my area. I'm just wondering how much food and meds cost you a month? (mostly food)I'm going to feed my dog 4 health brand dog food. And I'm thinking during the summer I will need flea and tick medicine. Probably looking at a 50 to 75lb dog. I have a big yard and during coon season well hit the woods hard.

Depends how you plan on feeding,

some leave the bowl out and they eat when they want,
    others have a dispenser,
while on the other hand others only feed in the morning and at night a portioned amount.

The monthly costs aren't bad for our dog, who is about 50lbs. The bad things are when she needs her teeth cleaned (she has very bad mouth chemistry and doesn't like rawhides). That requires bloodwork, all sorts of other bs and my wife and I just scream at the dog dentist "Take as much as you need!"
She also got rat trapped on her eyeball and that ruined her eye. When all was said and done, we spent two grand getting the eyeball juices scooped out and a prosthetic put in.
A bag of Blue Buffalo costs ~$60 and lasts a month or more. The frontline is $70 and that lasts 3 months x 3 doses.

What I'm getting at is that she's not expensive except when there's a medical emergency, or non emergency (like teeth cleaning).

I have a 1 yr old 60lb. chocolate lab, Foodwise (Canidae) - its about $60 per 3 weeks or so.
He's gone to the vet a couple times from some virus- gave him diarrhea. $150
Neuter and shots when he was younger were several hundred dollars.
Biggest for us is daycare ($32) once a week and toys (being he's a lab).

This thread is funny, cause, like everything it's location dependent. Your in TN. so cost will be on the lower end. A good buddy (a vet) in Scotsdale AZ. was ask last weekend about spaying cost, answer, $250.00. To which his best friend in college, (his wife is a vet, in a small town in N. AL.) says "Liz gets $80.00".

I spend about a 100 or so a month on this beast...but she is spoiled, gets the best of foods, and is bathed and flea/tick medicated all the time. And she also gets play toys and whatnot...so I added in just about everything!

My head is spinning. May I ask why I'd need so many leashes? I think one when it trees a coon to pull away would be sufficient no? My brains spinning lol. And t4daddy how do I do that?

I have an 85 lb chocolate lab and probably spend close to $80 - 100/month on food, toys and meds. He eats Natural Balance food so not overly expensive but not bargain brand either. The only meds he gets monthly are flea/tick and heartworm. When the dogs are younger, they need to go to the vet more frequently to keep up on shots but once they're about 1.5 years in, they can pretty much go once a year unless they get sick or hurt. His annual vet bill seems to always be around $100 for vaccinations. We actually ended up getting insurance on our dog also, sounds silly but now days vet bills can be outragous. He broke his leg a while back and the bill would have been over $2,000 for the surgery. It cost us a couple hundred with the insurance.

Do your research on the type of dog you get. Some dogs are more prone to illness than others. Labs are generally healthy and hearty dogs but bulldogs, for example, are prone to respitory issues.

    Try this.

    http://www.barfworld.com/

Cheap, keeps pup strong, happy and healthy.

My lab is 70pounds and 8 years old. Never met a vet in it's whole life.

Teeth are clean, coat shines and the dog is as robust as five years ago.

I get chicken scraps at a poultry near home at 4$ pour 10 pounds. More than enough for a week. I complement the diet with vegetables that went through a food processor, some olive oil and other food scraps mostly fat. I avoid anything high in sugars and cereals.

I have a 100 lb german shepherd. He eats a 40 lb bag of dog food every month. I usually buy them two at a time. Once you get past the first two years' shots and neuter/spay, the yearly cost goes down quite a bit. Mine is 3 years old now and he won't need many more vet visits since he's up on his immunizations. When they are puppies, they get alot of shots. I'd say maybe $200 per year for shots and toys as an adult, and add food cost to that.
Eukanuba has a promo where you buy 4 bags and get 1 free. I've gotten a few free bags each year.

You can change its food now. Just mix the old food with the new food over 2 or 3 days so it isn't a sudden change. Dogs' stomachs don't like sudden changes in diet or they get upset. Maybe 2/3 old food Day 1, 1/2 mix Day 2, 1/3 old food Day 3, then on Day 4 you're set with new food.

If it's stomach becomes upset, it isn't the end of the world. You just might have a watery mess in your yard/house.
