Don't buy an el cheapo led bulb otherwise it will suck.

I also recommend getting a flashlight from LED Lenser. They're a German company and make very good flashlights that are extremely bright for there size. It is as bright or brighter than my 3 D cell LED mag lite.
They are a little pricey but they are quality lights.

 

I really like the conversion module, it may be the same one you mentioned, I got from Amazon at $12 or so. Had a 2D i wanted to upgrade and you just add the module in place of the bulb. The D batteries were already getting dim with the standard bulb but the LED module immediately lit up much brighter than the standard bulb ever did even with fresh batteries.

 

Sells a 3 pack of 200 lumen AAA flashlights for about $18.......have tail cap switch, three modes bright, brighter and strobe

 

A side note to this topic, there is a local shop that happens to be an actual authorized warranty/repair dealer for MagLites. I was in there asking about the availability of LED conversions. They said MagLite had stopped selling the conversion kits because it was significantly slowing the sales of their newer lights.

They also said they didn't have too much repair business and it's usually 20 and 30 year old units needing only minor repairs like the switch or something.

 

Use the mag lights as back ups and upgrade yourself to Fenix flashlight
