If I had an AR I would put it back there

 

I'd put a shotgun or a CX4 Storm back there.

 

My 870 fits but I don't think I want to permanantly mount it back there

 

Having a gun mount in a easy access spot isn't a bad idea...I'd personally rather carry on me or have a pistol mount permanent

 

i normally have my pistol on me but other options aren't a bad idea like you said

 

ya, this one is for a 7 1/2 barrel new model black hawk, I love the holster and really want to get another one that I can modify

 

Dad wants me to start getting parts to build a AR upper in 7.62x39, trying to keep it inexpensive, but we want to keep reasonable accuracy (3 MOA?) , and reliability (quality mags, and what else?).
i'm thinking about a 16'' barrel, from my research (all 15 minutes) you see negligible gains in a 20'' barrel vs a 16'', and we'd be better off spending a little bit more on a quality barrel.

any thoughts, tips, suggestions?

 

The main problem is that magazines are very unreliable. The standard AR mag is straight and then just a slight bend or curve in it. Look at an AK mag, they have a much sharper curve. They are shaped this way to accomodate the rounds they hold.

Now look at how the AR and the AK hold their mags. The AR mag fits up inside the magwell, a straight magwell.
Look at the AK, there really isnt a magwell, just a spot for the mag to attatch to, so that the mag can keep its curvature.

Ive seen where people will take AR mags, cut them off just below where they stick out of the bottom of the magwell and then weld on an AK mag to the bottom.

Some people can only fit 8-10 rounds in a normal mag before they run into feeding issues.

If you decide on going this route do lots of research and know what you are getting into.

If I were you I would look into buying an AK, this system is proven reliable and once everyhting calms down probably alot cheaper than an AR. Or if you want a 30 cal round for an AR go with a 300blk. Much better round than the 7.62x39.
I agree with the before mentioned that the weak point of a 7.62x39 AR is the magazines.

 

i'll make a list of pro's and cons for x39 AR vs ak.
but neither dad or i are fans of the ak platform (just from the ergo's, not because it isn't a AR)

personally, i'd go with a 6.8 or 300 blk, but the cost of the rounds VS. the x39 is a big drawback.

yep, that is a draw back.

 

you can change out the stock on the AK for an AR stock and make it much more comfortable. for that round I'd pick the AK, hands down.

 

it's not the stock, it's the little things like the safety, and mag release location.

 

i just did some research on the 300 blk round (all that i knew before was word of mouth from a cousin), and i found out you can chop 223/5.56 casings to be 300 BLK spec, it'd be some work, but we have almost all the reloading equipment to load ammo, so it'd be worth it to just do a 300 BLK upper.

 

then you better save up for a supressor next. The 300blk is suppose to shine the brightest when ran with sub sonic loads/supressed. If you dont plan on that then is no reason to choose that over the 6.8, that I've read.

 

When i'm 18, and have my tax stamp I'm planning on building a suppressor, i probably won't do a SBR unless i have a few 80% lowers that i've done.

also, i think it's alot of work to reform brass to 6.8 spec, and the 300 will be fine for deer hunting in MISS. (max range ~150 yards)

Na 16, the 15" handgaurds make it look longer, and the perspective of that first picture for some reason make it look abnormally long.
