I hear you, I was just asking a hypothetical... I was finding that many lowers are made by a few and re-branded so I just went with one that had a good reputation. It still amazed me to see how many people would spend double or triple on another lower when basically all you get is the brand name, that was why I asked the question what people would buy if they had a choice. Another forum I'm a member of has group buys going on Aero Precision lowers and Quentin Defense lowers and the QD GB is taking off faster and they're over 50% more expensive.

My upper and lower wer already on order before I typed my post. I'm going with Aero Precision. I'm not stalling, I just can't drop $1k+ into this all at once. It's going to be a slow build up so I'm taking my time and researching the parts and tools I'll need to get it done.

If you're on a budget why not heed our advice and go PSA? You could have a complete rifle with money left over for ammo rather than a few parts to stare at on a workbench. I'm a bit of a brand snob but if I didn't have one I'd have a PSA midlegth rifle on order already rather than wasting all this time researching things that won't matter and spending money on things that won't matter. The more 'research' you do online the more likely you are to take 'advice' from someone who probably doesn't know but has a boner for a product costs more and doesn't deliver anything different. Nobody I know says 'Ohhhh, Aero Precision... that thing must shoot accurately!' so it doesn't matter. That's just me.

If I were to start over again, I'd build my ARs to shoot 5.45x39, and build AK74s instead of AK47s. Ammo is so much cheaper! :(

Adams or Huldra Arms 5.45x39 upper with any lower = shoot all day for pennies!

The price I'm paying for the Aero is relatively low compared to what I've been able to find around me. $70 gets it to my FFL, only one cheaper I've been able to find is a polymer lower. Honestly, none of these brands mean anything to me, I couldn't tell you anything about any of them so I'm the farthest thing from a brand snob you can get. I'm taking the things I read with a grain of salt, it's like TW, there are some great posts, some so-so and some that are complete and utter bullshit. I do the same thing when purchasing stuff for the truck, I like to know what I'm buying. Most of the stuff I've been looking into has been materials rather than brand. I'll narrow down which materials I want for the various components and choose the brand from there.

If I were looking for something now, I agree with you and I would be looking to buy complete parts or a completed rifle. I know I'm going to end up having more into this than what I can buy one for. This is a long term project for me, it'll take me a while to build up. I didn't want to just buy something off the shelf, I wanted to take my time, buy all the parts and pieces and build it myself. This build isn't about money or time, it's just something I've been wanting to do and finally kicking it off. I have stuff to shoot in the mean time :)

Random question since we are on The topic of building ARs, does anyone know if PSA does some good Black Friday sales?

If they do I think I'm gonna get a dissipator upper and finish my build

That's interesting spin. I hadn't even considered anything else besides 5.56. Might have to give that some thought!

Unfortunately, ammo is more expensive out here. I haven't found any online retailers that will ship to MA thanks to our lovely attorney general. Apparently, there are still a very small handful that will but i haven't found them yet. Either way, even if it's $0.25/rnd, that still adds up in a hurry!

It just feels nice paying $350 for 2,160 rounds instead of paying $400 for 1,000 rounds haha

For now. Once that foreign bulk surplus 5.45 dries up (it's going to happen sooner than later since so many are going away from 5.45) it will be the cost of the components which is nearly identical to 5.56. It will likely get higher in price based on volume and the fact that so many people loaded up on the 5.45 platform to take advantage of that cheap ammo.

^ true. same thing is starting to happen to surplus 7.62x54r ammo, although, it is still relatively cheap.

You could buy a converted saiga and a crate of ammo for the price of that upper alone..

Online advice is to be take with a grain of salt, as a lot of people are just brand snobs or don't know what they are talking about. (As previously stated)

I got my Aero lower for the same price 2 years ago, everything fit and lines up great. I also purchased my complete upper and MOE LBK thru PSA, and like I said no complaints what so ever. 600-700 rounds of 5.56 through it, never a FTF or FTE, no jams. I also recommend the .22 conversion, I've put well I've 2k rounds through it with only a few FTF or FTE and mainly due to the bolt being dirty.

    Current setup:

I'll take that beer whenever you are ready. My shots hit right where they should. I put my finger where I was trained to put it, by a guy that can shoot better than pretty much anybody I know(interview also on my blog), and it works fine for me.

Maybe you just need more practice with a Glock? I do shoot Glocks and have always liked them. I have also owned an M&P Shield, an XD .45, a Kimber Ultra Raptor(which ran like a piece of shit, great looking gun though), a few Rugers, and several other pistols. For the most part I liked them all.

If you ever make it down to Georgia, you can bring me that beer and I'd love to go out shooting with you.

For sure man. It's just a personal pet peeve of mine. The point of my drunken tirade was to just do what feels natural and gets you the best groups. A lot of instructors get so hung up on forcing students to do things the way they do they miss sight of the fact that everyone is different, myself included. ;)
