looking for advice here. What is a good deer hunting rifle? I am thinking that is going to be my next firearm purchase, but not sure what to go with. For the sake of me being uneducated about guns, please also tell me why a particular rifle is good for deer. Thanks.

    X2
    Or 30-06 or .308

If you go the lever gun route, I reccomend the marlin 336, much easier to scope than a '94 if that is what you will do with it

What kind of hunting will you be doing? Stalking? stand hunting?
What terrain? What will the longest shot most likely be?

I love my marlin 30-30 for the stand and brush hunting i do in MS.

As of right now, I don't hunt. I plan to change that though. I do want to go with a scope. Not sure on longest shot. Deer are what I see as my prey. I will probably be stalking more than in a stand.

I did a google on best deer rifles, and one site said the Remington 700 was the number 1 gun. On Remington website, I checked out the 700 and I like the look of the tactical one at the top of the list. Nice rail on top for easy scope mounting. Looks like it was made more for military than hunting purposes. 24 or 26 inch barrel, chambered in .308 or .300. There were a few others in that list that look nice as well.

Yup, when looking for a hunting rifle I got all enamored in this caliber is better than this in one aspect, but is worse in another BS.

For my, being in PA 99.9999999999999999999999% of my shots will be within 100 yards. Got an offer to trade a scoped Marlin 336 in .35Rem on some crap I had just sitting in my basement trying to sell and I took it.

The .35Rem is over 100 years old and is by no mean the most powerful, accurate, or flattest shooting deer round. But, within 100 yards it'll shoot minute of deer and take em down, so who cares.

Also look at the Savage guns, you can get a comparable or even better gun thatn the 700 for less money

R700 is a good gun, but kinda expensive for what it is. 308 is a good caliber also.
This, or check out the ruger american rifle, it's not super duper tactical pin driving accurate, but it's usually 1 MOA @100 yds.
And it has a detachable magazine (which i prefer) not the built in magazine like the r 700.
