White House Petition

So far, the Obama administrations has ignored petitions posted on the website they created for posting petitions. But it looks like the media are putting on a bit of pressure on Obama to start reading and responding to those petitions. So get out there and sign. Here is a good one to start with:

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/pet...e-awb/sdKKkKJ5

While you are at it, don't forget your letters to congress. Here's mine:

"Upcoming anti-gun legislation as suggested by President Obama and Senator Feinstein will do nothing to reduce crime, and is financially unfeasible.

Like Senator Feinstein’s 1994 bill, the new bill places a great emphasis on what the anti-gun lobby refers to as “assault weapons”- which in reality are modern sporting rifles. Magazines with a capacity of more than 10 rounds, pistol grips, and black plastic stocks do not make a gun more lethal. Like much anti-gun legislation in the past, the proposed ban has a basis in dogma, histrionics, and false statistics. Ms. Feinstein has openly admitted that she determined what guns would be banned in her 1994 bill and the upcoming 2013 bill by looking at pictures in magazines, and selecting guns and features that looked the most menacing to her.

In some recent mass shooting events, the perpetrators used modern sporting rifles. Had they instead used single-shot rifles from the 19th century, the outcomes would have been the same. Those criminals were firing at un-armed and un-protected people. Without resistance, and with the assurance of being in “gun free” zones, the criminals did not need to worry about the time needed to reload their weapons.

In my opinion, the sociopaths in those tragedies chose modern semi-automatic rifles not because they are more lethal than guns with wood stocks and smaller magazine capacity (they are not). They chose the rifles they used because they resemble what they saw in the video games they played relentlessly. Many of the “first person shooter” video games available today consist of nothing more than a simulation of walking through a building and shooting every living creature. Most well-adjusted individuals will have no interest or will quickly lose interest in such games. But for an angry social outcast, games of that type provide a fantasy world where they can spend days on end doing nothing but pretending to shoot people… a perfect dress rehearsal for an active shooter event.

The proposed new legislation also suggests making the vast majority of firearms currently in private hands “grandfathered” but under the scope of the National Firearms Act. This would mean extensive investigative and clerical work for the registration of each of up to 300 million guns. The FBI, BATFE, and state and local law enforcement agencies do not have the resources available to provide these services. And the cost of meeting NFA requirements as proposed by Senator Feinstein could far exceed the cost of simply providing better protection for our schools.

If you, as a member of congress, wish to minimize mass shooting events, and violent crime in general, I would suggest the following:
  • Work towards educational programs that would help parents and teachers to identify danger signs of certain types of mental illness, and provide some means to compel those presenting danger signs to undergo evaluation by mental health experts.
  • Mandate compulsory detention for those who have been prescribed certain anti-psychotic drugs, and refuse to take the drugs or refuse to meet with their mental health care professional.
  • Eliminate “gun free zones”.
  • Make safety training mandatory for all individuals wishing to purchase a firearm. Not only is safety instruction of vital importance, it compels potential gun buyers to spend time with an instructor who can be trained to watch for danger signs as mentioned above.
  • Assign DHS to provide guidance to school districts on how to best secure campuses.
  • Work with the video game industry to add game play time constraints for “first person shooter” games.

If you want to reduce violent crime, enact legislation that will reduce violent crime. Do not take away the guns that let you decide what books you should read. Do not take away the guns that allow you to worship where and how you please. Do not take away the guns that made the Japanese Empire decide not to invade the American mainland. Do not take away the guns that allow you to vote. Do not take away the guns that allow people to vote for you."
