In my defense zone, 15 feet is too close.

Your an LEO, I'm surprised, look up stats on home defense. Most "deadly" encounter are within 15 feet. It's not very often you get to watch them pull into your driveway knowing shit is about to hit the fan, most of the time your woken to trouble.

But, yes, every home/situation is different. I live in a 3 bedroom rambler and all of our bedrooms are on one end of the house. If I fire a gun from my bedroom or hallway outside it I am less than 15' through 2 walls to my 2 year old and 20' and 1 wall to my 4 year old.

Buckshot will easily penetrate 2 walls and still be very lethal, hardly slowed.

hes saying 15 ft because a person can close that distance almost instantly and attack you with a knife or anything

Yup, and no need to be surprised. Either in the house or outside, letting someone get within 15 feet is way too close (if you can avoid it).

Outside of 15ft, a hit with birdshot will be no more effective than a miss with a slug.
Inside of 15ft, you aren't going to have time to get a shot off, much less get off a shot of birdshot, then load a round of buck and fire a 2nd time.

If the fact that you are pointing a gun at someone does not stop them, birdshot will not stop them.

You need to evaluate the layout of your home and predetermine where and when you may fire. Penetration is an issue for any round that is going to kill an attacker.

Not to be a dick, but maybe we should keep this thread on topic. There are other threads to discuss home defense topics.

Rich I respect a lot of what you say on here but that's just wrong on many levels. Maybe some of you guys have huge houses and weapons stashed conveniently. I have a 1600sq ft rambler. In a real intruder situation it will be extremely close quarters. I just watched a video of a 12g with #8 birdshot at 20'. Lots of damage. At max, ie: hes in 1 corner i'm in the other corner, the farthest distance between two points in my house is about 25-30'.

And I don't have to get a shot off and then load a round of buck or slug. I pre-load it that way. 1-2 Bird either #4 or BB then 2-3 00 buck and then a slug. I can pump and shoot damn fast.

I just think it's silly to broadcast only slug or buck for home protection. Scenarios are different, fit the shell to your personal scenario.

there has been tons of research on this already. I suggest doing a little bit of reading. Rich is correct, birdshot is called that for a reason. I know two people who have been shot with it, one at nearly point blank range and another at around 10'. Both are alive and well.

I'd like to learn how to reload my own stuff. Someday I'll make the investment and get the equipment to do so.

A little bit of reading? I do research for a living, literally. And I have researched this topic to death. There is plenty of evidence showing both ways to be right or wrong. It is not a 1 sided argument.

All I am simply saying is for me in my situation, and for people in a smaller living space, 5 shells with 1 or 2 being #4 shot or BB is a good way to go. Most experienced pump users can cycle pretty damn fast if needed.

I would rather risk that than sending buck or a slug into my kids room from 15'.
