A buy back means that the sponsor of the program would give the person who turned in the guns money, not the other way around! you can't buy the guns. They check the serial numbers to see if any have been reported stolen, then they take them to be shredded and melted down again.

Does this mean there were actually some folks bringing in something worth anything close to the $100 they were offering? I mean something not broken, rusted and useless?

That would be what I call not smart.

Yes, I understand. Anyone with a brain is not going to take a gun and hand it in for money that isnt worth the money in the first case. Thats the point I was trying to make. If you have seen some of the guns that come in during these "buybacks" they are mostly pretty rough, crocked barrels, cracked, dirty cause folks dont clean them. I have been involved in few of them. If you were a gunsmith, it would be great to keep you busy, and put a little income in your pocket.

Only operational firearms were eligible for the gift cards in the buyback program.
After they ran out of gift cards, some people just walked up, handed the gun over to the police, and walked away.

How can they "buy-back" if they never owned them in the first place??? Hmmm.

They don't make you show ownership. The entire goal is to get guns off the streets. Simple as that.

So the gun is off the streets, cops run the numbers and contact the last registered owner or who reported it stolen, and return it....I would agree, that works well.

We have a few guys here in SoCal who troll the buybacks and snag the Curio & Relic long guns and pay like $20 more than what the cops are offering.

For long guns over 50 years old, the transfer does not have to happen at a gun shop.

In some cities, the politicians wised up to that and they started holding the buybacks in school parking lots... anyone trolling the buyback would be subject to arrest under the federal gun free school zone law, anywhere within 1000ft of the school.

That tactic has been used here in Md as well. Most of the time (here) the guys and girls trying to buy the long guns were felons and or wanted, underage. Etc. If the Feds would do their job the right way and enforce the laws on the books we would rarely have to waste tax money on such programs. We would be happy and responsible gun owners. That is for the other gun thread. lol:D

Wouldn't the organizers be breaking the law also by having the events on school property to begin with? And then they invite the citizens to bring guns onto school property, knowing it is against the law.....
