    Speer Gold Dot JHP (preferred)
Federal HST (vastly improved over the Hydrashock)
Winchester Ranger SXT (same as Black Talon without the black coating)
    +P loading for 9mm

All three run nicely through my Glock, 1911, XD, and Beretta.
I will not use a round for defense in a semi-auto until I have put at least 200rds on target.
I would trust my life to any of these three.

All great. Federal HST is my personal favorite and all my CCWs (and nightstand gun) are loaded with it.

Many bullet designs look good, many don't actually work in real world use. Ballistic testing of many hollow points have shown that they plug up with clothing and don't expand, often showing poorer results than a FMJ round. Look for independent tests, find one you like, and then fire a few hundred from your gun. There are many ammo tests on youtube and you might even find one tested with your model gun. What works well in my gun may not in yours and any round that fires is more effective than one that doesn't.

I knew a guy that would alternate between HP and FMJ every other bullet for that reason.

That was the problem with the original Hydrashock.

Anything that shoots is better than a poke in the eye. I'm putting my money on hornady critical duty until I get my hands on the Winchester rangers. Rangers are what lapd are using in 9mm. I'll take their word for the reliability..

    Bingo.

Shit happens fast and you will not have time to fuck with your slide, no matter how much time you spend practicing at the range.
Nothing can prepare the average civilian for the adrenalin rush that accompanies a confrontation. You'll be doing well to have the motor skills needed to shut the safety off. Chambering a round is not going to happen.

Moderate fail on the part of the guy gassing up... his situational awareness was lacking, and that is likely what made him a target. He should have been aware of the thugs before they were that close... they completely caught him by surprise.
It could have turned out very badly for him, fortunately, the thugs gave him the break that he needed to draw down.

Condition 1 always when I carry. One in the chamber and hammer back.

You're not gonna have the time to rack the slide or even cock the hammer

I always carry with one in the chamber since it's a revolver. Wouldn't want it any other way but it all depends on how comfortable you are with your concealed. I also carry openly usually since I can do that.

    nothing cool
One in the chamber here. Didnt read all 36 pages. Im sure there are pros and cons. In my mind i cant think of a reason why i wouldnt have one ready in the chamber. But thats just my opinion. Ill read some of the pages in this thread later and maybe theres good reasons either way.

Not always such an easy answer.

I've actually had people tell me that their gun instructor recommended carrying a revolver with TWO empty chambers... the one under the hammer, and the next chamber so you won't actually fire unless you REALLY REALLY intend to.

These "gun instructors" need a smack across the back of the head with an N-Frame. I'm seriously going to carry my SP101 with only THREE rounds?

I can see the point in one empty cylinder on single-action revolvers, and older DA's that lack a transfer bar, but all modern DA and many SA have a transfer bar safety. You can load up the entire cylinder and pound on the hammer all day long with a carpenter's hammer and all you're going to do is destroy your gun. One is not going to "go off" from being dropped.... even if the impact pulls the trigger, as soon as the trigger is released, the transfer bar drops.

I always carry one in the chamber. Locked Cocked and Ready to rock.

I carry a glock and all it has is that "trigger safety" and I feel comfortable with it. I have been shot at plenty of times while in Iraq and when your adrenaline gets pumping and your body goes into the "flight or fight" mode you lose dexterity in your extremities and your body shuts down systems it doesn't need for that moment.

Unless you continously practice physically and run rehearsals in your head about cocking a round in the chamber when you are in that situation you will most likely forgot to when you are in it.

It's like when some people go draw their weapon but forget that they have a thumb safety and wonder why rounds of death and destruction aren't flying down range.

Whatever you are comfortable with is what it comes down to. Which ever one you choose though stick with it and practice practice practice and run those scenarios of what would I do in your head to mentally condition your body to respond that way if you are ever in that situation.

    stay frosty and Semper Fi.
