no, i know that. but at what point is it illegal? barrel? barrel assembled on upper? barrel+upper on lower?

You need to have the stamp before anything. Sounds rediculous I know, but the ATF is all about "intent". Just get the stamp then buy the barrel.

This is a matter of contention. Common advice is to not own anything that isn't able to be assembled into a legal rifle. If you have a pistol or virgin lower, you should be fine with the barrel. If you only have a rifle or rifle lower and purchase a short barrel, you're in a definite gray area.

If you come across a deal you absolutely have to jump on, store it at a friend's house, work, etc. Anywhere where AR rifles aren't present should be fine. Better safe than sorry.

Edited to add: If you have NO ARs, there's nothing illegal about owning a complete upper, even owning everything but the receiver. Just don't have all the parts needed to build a complete SBR until your Form 1 is in-hand.

You can own any length upper you want. Maybe you are going to build a AR pistol... I just wouldn't have a complete lower hanging around not doing anything...

You can have the upper without a stamp but if you have any rifle lowers laying around you can be nailed with constructive possession

I clean the BCG (bolt carrier group) and barrel. give everything else a wipe down and your good to go.

as long as your not shooting steel case ammo and there is not a lot of humidity you dont even have to clean after every trip if you dont want. just wipe down external parts.

    Check out my sig...
I think he was talkkng about the gas ports/tubes or piston itself.

In my Army time I only cleaned the end of the gas port that is visible inside the upper receiver. BUT i was medical and only needed to qualify every 2 years so take that as you will.

Hey guys I'm pretty much a newb when it comes to rifles so I figured I'd ask some questions here. I've been looking at getting an AR-15 but was curious if it's cheaper to buy a lower and upper separate along with whatever else you need to complete it or if it's cheaper to buy a fully assembled one. Any help would be appreciated.

The gas block is self cleaning as is the piston cup on the pistons I'm aware of.

Haha, I was hoping someone would appreciate that.

It is almost always cheaper to assemble a lower and buy the upper separately; especially if you can find a local lower for a good price.

DPMS I got it real cheap. Its not bad, but I dislike the play between the upper and lower. Im looking into a Stag, stellar piece of machinery!!! Or maybe ill get that m1a1, or that m1 garand ive always wanted....so hard to spend my money...sigh

    Congrats!

The play between the upper and lower is normal but annoying. I fix that issue with an Accuwedge cut to size.

You need a stripped lower, lower parts kit, and a stock assembly (stock, buffer tube, buffer, buffer spring) I assembled my lowers with basic hand tools I had in the garage.
