12 gauge for every game in north America ?

I believe you can hunt every single legal game animal in North America with a 12 gauge shotgun.

Slugs for big game and bird shot for birds and rabbits.

Anyone disagree ?

Grizzly can be taken effectively with a 12 gauge. Lots of people do it.

Bison, caribou, elk, grizzly, moose, mountain goat, mountain sheep can't shoot with a shotgun in BC. Everything is legal with centrefire except migratory birds.

Hmmm, I didn't know the law in Canada. I was thinking more along the lines of if the 12 gauge is effective and capable of killing those animals.

That's a shame you cant hunt big game in BC with a shotgun.

Grizz get taken down all the time up here with shotguns, its just always in self defense. It'll knock a bear down sure, but I have a lot of respect for the guy that goes looking for one to surprise it with a shotgun. Or a bow for that matter. I have a few frienda that hunt for bear with bows. I think the natural progression will take them knife hunting for the kodiak brown bear and that'll be the end of that.

I agree on the principle that various 12 gauge load strengths/types can be obtained (or maybe handloaded) to suit almost any game animal. Probably the single most versatile hunting weapon in existance.

Prairie dogs would be quite difficult to shoot with a 12 Ga, at least with any effect.

True, that's the down side. You won't be hunting anything at longer ranges with a shotgun.

Completely depends on the shotgun and the round used. Properly set-up, a slug can be accurate at a pretty good distance.

Very true. But probably not accurate enough for typical great plains or out west hunting distances.

A praire dog hit by a 500 grain slug fired from 500 yards away is still going to be "unfindable". But you wouild have to hold at steep angle to reach that distance and the accuracy circle may be several feet at that distance even with the best shotgun/load/optics.
