I agree, it is game on for the dog at that point but the dog owner should have had the dog on a leash and it wouldn't have mattered what the dog's intentions were. This whole situation traces back to irresponsible dog owners making a bad decision that almost cost them their dog's life. I think the only people at fault were the dog owners. They were in a state with a leash law and clearly were not in control of their dog.

not arguing just giving my opinion. instead of stopping and trying to be nice to the dog, pull out your gun and shoot the fucking thing. good plan OP.

I would argue that you did feel that your life (or spouse) was in danger in some way. If you didn't feel that way, then why did you draw a weapon?

If more concerned with wildlife or other animals on the loose and up to no good, why not carry pepper spray? You mentioned you wouldn't, but I'm just curious why. I would think it would be more comfortable to run with as well?

Nice job staying in control of the situation!
I have been bitten a few times by other dogs. I had an Akita as a kid. I was bitten more than once by thins dog. It was in the 80'ds when people were not so sue happy. Not that is an excuse, but I think people are more aware now.

Also, My sister in-law's boy friends trains Malinois. He has a dog called Storm. The dog is 100% police dog. He trained them in NewYork. I trust him and I trust his dog and he asked me if I would like to be bit. I said absolutely. It was a crazy experience. One I am glad I took. The dog bit me through a bit glove and took me to the ground. I was amazed at the power and speed. Storm is about 85lbs of pure mussel. She took me down in about a second. No bark no sign she was going to. Just the command of attack and I was on the floor.

I don't think pepper spray would detour Storm. I just want to be ready for the biggest threat that could be there.

Can you open carry in Maryland? We also do not have dog breed restrictions. I don't believe there needs to be any. I do believe people should have to be trained to own a dog.. Just like a gun people should have to be licensed to one them. (I'm Kidding)

That's a good question. I mean good for that guy for defending his dog. I would like to think I would do the same for my dog. But at the same time if I care so much about my animals it would have been on a leash. There are a lot of animals in the desert, from rabbits to ground squirrels. And there is a road that was 10 feet away from were this indecent was with decent traffic. see smash rabbits all the time.

I also do not believe he saw my gun. or that it registered in his brain on what it was. I believe in his mind it looked like I was squaring off with his dog about to kick it or some thing.

I also believe I was in control of my self and my weapon. He was not injured because I did see him and control was exhibited.

Am I ready to go to jail. No. I could have gone last night for brandishing a fire arm. If they said they wanted to call the police I would have stayed there and waited for the police to come. That beeing said.. If the guy had the brass to jump in front of a gun. I would hate to think what he would have done if I did not give his dog the 3 count and I just shot it as soon as it made contact with me.

Good job OP.

I carry when ever possible. You can't always carry every tool available and when you have to choose which one to carry, always take the gun first.

I am sure a lot of people don't know that in AZ, even in metro Phoenix, coyotes are a real threat. When they get hungry enough, they have been known to attack a human, although that is rare, it is still a concern. You have to be prepared to defend yourself.

The OP would have been just in AZ for shooting the dog, although I am glad he kept a level head. I hope that if I am ever in that situation, I am able to do the same.

From my understanding the dog charged him and got a slight hold of his foot then started challenging him and thats when he pulled his weapon. I had a similar experience with a 100# rott, looking back it wouldve been nice to have something (gun or pepper spray) just in case the owner didnt see his dog at my waist showing its teeth and growling.

do you still jog 3 times a week in the phx summers?

nice move on the dog..i've been chased before. i cant carry. i almost had to stab a pit once. i skidmarked my shorts for sure.

i hate dog owners that dont "know" their dogs. some dogs should be leashed..some even muzzled.

i never read anywhere in the OP that the dog bit his heels. i read that his heels hit the dog from him running and not stopping. i agree the dog shouldve been on a leash. at the same time, using that kind of force... you better be able to articulate to a reasonable person that if you had not shot the dog or pulled your gun, the situation wouldve ended with you or someone else getting injured by the dog. and i dont think, based on the OP, that specalt could do that.

by the way there is no such thing as a "leash law" it is a city/town ordinance and is not a criminal or civil violation.

OP didn't need to be attacked by the dog to feel threatened. In this logic if someone was trying to break in your house and they had a gun but you also had a gun. If the robber who was a threat to your life and property at this point, were to draw on you, would you let him shoot you and then think afterwards "Hmm this guy had never shot me before up until this point"?

What if that happened any old time?? Properly holstered functional weapon shouldn't just go off because you are on a jog. Don't come in here and try to stir up shit for no reason.

OP - Did you report the incident to the police? I was involved in something similar, except it was a group of people advancing on me and after I disengaged from the situation - my delay in calling the police worked against me during the interview process, to a minor degree.

Get a report on file about the incident, imo.
