I wouldn't mind adding a folding hand saw to the mix too, in my previous set up I also had a pocket chain saw.

4/5 of half an inch and 3"s long. It is a pry bar/scraper.
I have a friend with the esee 5, i played with it for a bit, just do not find it to be optimal for a camp knife. the thickness hinders it in my eye. Now if you were just using it to baton logs, ok. A good small hatchet will do a better job. the 5 is also a heavy knife.
I also like the bark river bravo 1 or 1.5.

i have no use for a Busse battle mistress { i think that is what it is called }, but i sure would like to play with one in my living room, and scare off my rabid blue heeler with it.

buy what you want, just trying to give you food for thought.

No Becker love? Blade steel and heat treatment are comparable to ESEE, but at half the price. Honestly, I'm not a fan of the ESEE handles--the Becker scales are much more comfortable IMO, both in micarta and grivory.

I'm surprised nobody mentioned the Doug Ritter MK2 (unofficially the Becker BK12), the BK2 (strong contender for the ESEE 5 btw), BK10, BK7, and even BK16. All terrific knives, and all knives I have thoroughly used and abused :) Nothing against ESEE, I just find that Beckers are more ergonomic and just as tough.

The thing is awesome. Sometimes I feel silly for even having it, but it seems like everytime I camp I find a use for it. I'm glad my buddy gave it to me, because I honestly would never have considered paying that much for a knife before. But now I get it!

    good luck!!

i've freakin memorized the catalog, so if you have any questions. :D

the HUNTER axe is the same thing except they made the poll (back of the axe head) more protruded and smooth to hammer off animal hides. more money tho. about $50 more. the SFA can be hard to find. they sell the best. man, you are gonna love it. it is as sharp as any of your knives.

dang all this talk about the axe I want to get it now before the knife... or I could just get both at the same time...

all though I think I would end up going with the Scandinavian forest axe.
