I'm also a fan of the Wilson Combat Spec Ops but that's going to be a fair bit more expensive and I'm still not sure I would actually take on over a TRP Operator. For my money the TRP is the best 1911 on the market. Sure you can spend more but you would be hard pressed to find a better 1911. Ignore anyone who says anything with the word 'Kimber' in it. Take all the rest of the advice given with a grain of salt.

based on your price range there are many guns that will fit the bill for you... my only concern is the amount of range time your planning on puttin it through... thats 5-10k a year... at that many rounds a year out of a pistol i would buy as high end as possible... pistols (vice revolvers) are subject to mechanical faliure quicker in my experience... also i would look for a model with lots of aftermarket support... your going to find the guns downfalls... all production guns have them and your also going to be replacing parts... you dont want to continually be putting shitty factory parts in

Help me choose a 1911

Colt is the way to go. But that is also the only one I have ever shot. I don't own one but my father has a pair. He used to teach master classes for the pd. It's by far his favorite of the 1911 model.

I mean really? 1911s have more aftermarket support than any other handgun. Factory parts are rarely used to repair worn out factory parts, and "factory parts" is misleading to begin with since a lot of manufacturers use aftermarket small parts to begin with.

Frame and slide is the only concern. Everything else is meant to last and to be easily replaced when it gets worn out. If not, that's why you shop for a long term manufacturer with lifetime warranty (Springfield) and a service dept. that does the job right with proper turnaround.

I've seen more people have problems with kimbers than with any other brand of 1911s

Also FWIW I have shot 20k a year in each of my 1911s and the only breakage was Kimber. Whether they were $600 or well over $2000, no problems whatsoever, Kimber aside.

Kimber is popular. Has nothing to do with anything.

I mentioned that because you have no facts supporting your comments and they are incorrect assumptions.

Also I suggest for a first 1911, stay with a full size Govt model.

If you are looking at the TRP, that is an excellent gun. I love my Springfield's!

My facts are experiences of friends who have owned and still own kimbers.

Kimber is fine. Overpriced is all, and they cut corners on their part quality, namely the MSH, for their price tag.

Their marketing is attractive and the finished piece is clean. Rarely any machining marks, bevels are clean, good checkering, slide to frame fitting, barrels are good, triggers are good enough. Not amazing and not wholly better than much cheaper 1911s.

Of course I'm not basing my words on my friends experiences with guns I don't own and things I watch on YouTube.
