Help me choose a 1911

So i'm looking to buy my first 1911. My price range is about 1500 a little less if I can. I'm planning on putting 100-200 rounds a week though it. I have been looking at the Springfield TRP, but im not sure that would be the best option for me. Thanks in advance for any help!

 

I've shot a Kimber Custom CDPII. For your price range, that's perfect for a gun that's been run through the custom shop. I'm sure other, more seasoned shooters will have a bunch of great information, just thought I'd throw in my 0.02.

 

IMO there is only one you should really look at.....its the Colt.

 

kimber is only considered good by people who know nothing about 1911. its like buying a harley, you are paying for a name. the quality of 1911 across the board has increased so dont be afraid to look at some of the "lower end" ones. RIA if you wanna go bottom dollar, any of the major names if you wanna go mid range are fine for the most part. If you are gonna spend over a thousand (which I wouldnt bother for my first one), the popular names are nighthawk, wilson, lesbauer, any of the big names. When you figure out exactly what you want in a 1911, that is when I would step up and pay the big bucks for one of the big guys to build one exactly how you want it.

 

Thanks for the advice! I was able to shoot my friends sig 1911 nightmare last weekend and since have been looking to get a 1911 of my own. Im still trying to figure out what route I should go.

If you've got the money buy the colt. My next pick would be the Kimber, though I had a Remington and it was flawless. It's really a design marvel in that gun.

 

You need to shoot one enough to figure out if you get hammer bite or not, so you can decide whether you want a model with a beavertail or not.

My hands are relatively slender so I don't get hammer bite, so I went with the basic design.

 

For $1500 I'd be lurking on Gunbroker waiting for an unmolested used Les Baer.

You didn't mention what features you were looking for - tactical vs classy? Railed? Threaded? Govt/Commander/Officer?

 

I'd agree a bit with this. IMO if you are looking to shell out 1500 for a 1911, don't get a Kimber. Not that they aren't decent guns, but 1500 is getting real close to custom guns.

I just snagged a Les Baer TRS for 1600, and that gun is way nicer than any Kimber and dare I say Colt I've ever shot/handled.

 

id go for a colt series 70. i think they started making them again.

Steer away from Kimber regardless of the custom shop marketing - poor value brand.

 

i own a spring field milspec and i have a friend with a kimber.

when comparing the 2 i dont see why there was a major price difference.

Ed Brown makes a fine 1911 and is worth the price. If anybody thinks that has anything to do with bevels then they are in over there head.
