Like the title says looking at buying my first ar. Want some of your guys opinions on a good brand. I've shot quite a few of them. I really like smith &wesson. Seem very smooth. Gun will be used mostly for recreational use. Target shooting, small game hunting, home defense etc.. Let me hear what you guys have and recommend. Have about a $1000 budget. Also looking to just buy my first one and build a second one sometime down the road.

I put in an order on 12/20/12 for a S&W M&P15PSX. I have yet to see it, and I ordered mine through the regional wholesaler. The Smith factory is less than half an hour from where I live.

I finally got pissed and bought a stripped lower made by Spike's Tactical. I got myself the AR15 builders guide and I'm just going to build my own.

You can build a rifle cheaper than you can buy off the shelf.

Anything made by Bravo Company, Daniel Defense, Troy or Colt (either complete or parts) is going to be top notch. Magpul and Troy make good furniture and rails.

I own both a S&W M&P 15x/22 and love them. Smiths are mil-spec as well.

Depending on the model. Some have 1/9 twist barrels and semi-auto bcgs.

Yes you are right, I forgot those two.

If you are building, try and get an M16 bolt carrier group and a decent trigger. Anything is just about better than "stock" but two top shelf triggers are Timney, Gisele or Chip McCormick.

It probably would be a good investment if you bought a book about these rifles, you can get so many different opinions and all are pretty much right.

I found a colt 6920 magpul dark earth edition here in my town brand new with two pmags and a cleaning kit for 1147 bucks. Fully furnished by magpul. Seem like a decent price? I've shot a few colts before and I do like them. I've always heard colt is like the caddilac of ar's.

I sell and own guns from Noveske, LWRCi, Spikes Tactical, Colt and Daniels Defense, the one I keep loaded in my personal safe at home is a LMT.

That should tell you how much I think of LMT.

Can't go wrong with Colt. I carried a Colt M16 for a while and it would eat muddy rounds like candy. However, I got the same reliability out of my Smith and Wesson, over 2,000 rounds and not one jam. It's not a bad price, but you may be able to get the same effect out of a S&W for a little bit less.

I was also looking into buying my first AR. I have been leaning towards the Sig Sauer M400 enhanced. They go for $1149 and have magpul furniture.

Buying the gun parts separately with what you want or need seems to be cheaper than buying an AR15 from a single manufacture. I bought a complete polymer lower (new frontier) and a standard stripped reciever (aero precision), the polymer lower hammer shattered within 50 rounds.

if you are good with tools and machines and have access you can buy a 80 percent lower and mill/drill it out if you want your own lower that you built on your own. Also is does not need to be registered with the govt.

Check this out as these are WONDERFUL rifles for a beginner... or anyone for that matter. Watch for their 'Midlength Madness' sale and order up a midlength upper and they have great deals on lowers & lower build kits and such as well. Heck of a way to get your first AR or AR build on a roll.

I have used nothing but colts since my younger days in the military. I think colt or the S&W you would be fine. I currently have the Colt M4 LE6920.

The price you stated above for

"I found a colt 6920 magpul dark earth edition here in my town brand new with two pmags and a cleaning kit for 1147 bucks. Fully furnished by magpul. Seem like a decent price? I've shot a few colts before and I do like them. I've always heard colt is like the caddilac of ar's."

Seems like a good price. I paid 1400 OTD for a brand new one back in Dec of 2012 for a stock M4. I had to wait 3 months as supplies were gone. Thats here in California.
